Patent number: 8074777Abstract: A disengagement/disconnect assembly for disengaging a generator from a gear box includes an inner ball screw having an angled threading on an outer surface thereof and surrounding and operatively engaged to a rotating generator drive shaft to cause rotation of the inner ball screw, the inner ball screw having axial dog teeth engaged to corresponding teeth of the gear box drive shaft, an outer ball screw surrounding and normally rotating with the inner ball screw and having a spherical ball and an angled ball track between the inner and outer ball screws, a lock, and a brake for slowing or stopping rotation of the outer ball screw so that the inner ball screw rotates relative to the outer ball screw along the ball track and slides axially toward the lock thereby disengaging the generator from the gear box drive shaft.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2007Date of Patent: December 13, 2011Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Balwinder S. Birdi, Michael W. Duddeck, William M. Scherzinger, Miguel A. Guzman

Patent number: 7786630Abstract: A high speed generator cooling system directs a cooling oil spray through a chamber inside a coil support wedge assembly, which may be disposed adjacent to the generator coils. Heat from the generator coils may be conducted through the walls of the coil support wedge assembly and into the chamber where it is removed by the cooling oil spray passing through the chamber. The cooling oil passes through a generator rotor shaft and into a cooling passage in least one of the rotor laminations.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2007Date of Patent: August 31, 2010Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Simon L. Waddell, William M. Scherzinger, Gregor McDowall, Balwinder S. Birdi, Michael W. Duddeck, Edward M. Down

Patent number: 7728477Abstract: A permanent magnet rotor of a generator is used to excite a electromagnet stator to generate electric power for the generator and to control a disengagement mechanism whereby the generator can disengage from an accessory, such as a gear box drive shaft, when the generator is not working properly. The permanent magnet is affixed to an outer ball screw which normally rotates with an inner ball screw that is operatively engaged to the accessory. An increased load to the electromagnet stator slows or stops rotation of the permanent magnet rotor and outer ball screw, causing the inner ball screw to move axially from the outer ball screw and away from an accessory and toward a re-settable lock.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 2008Date of Patent: June 1, 2010Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Balwinder S. Birdi, Michael W. Duddeck, William M. Scherzinger, Simon L. Waddell

Patent number: 7327048Abstract: A rotating electrical machine, such as an aircraft starter-generator, that may be operated in either a DC motor mode or an AC generator mode. The machine includes a conventionally wound main stator that is selectively configurable as a multi-pole AC stator and a multi-pole DC stator. The machine also includes rotor windings that are configured to be selectively coupled to either an exciter or a plurality of commutator segments, and DC brushes that are selectively moveable into, and out of, electrical contact with the commutator segments, to thereby electrically couple and decouple a DC power source to and from, respectively, the rotor windings.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2006Date of Patent: February 5, 2008Assignee: Honeywell International, Inc.Inventors: Mingzhou Xu, Michael W. Duddeck, Wayne T. Pearson, William M. Scherzinger, David E. Stout

Patent number: 7230363Abstract: One embodiment of the invention relates to a low profile electric generator having a short axial length. A cylindrical rotor body defines an interior cavity and is coupled to a driveshaft along the axis of the cylindrical body. A first rotor assembly is coupled to the inner surface of the cylindrical body, the first rotor assembly defining a space to receive a first stator that is independent from the cylindrical body. A second rotor assembly is coupled to the outer surface of the cylindrical body and electrically coupled to the first rotor assembly. A second stator is arranged around the second rotor assembly, independent from the cylindrical body, and radially positioned about the axis of the cylindrical body. By arranging the generator components in such configuration, the axial length of the generator is reduced in comparison to a conventional generator.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2004Date of Patent: June 12, 2007Assignee: Honeywell International, Inc.Inventors: David E. Stout, Wayne T. Pearson, Mingzhou Xu, Michael W. Duddeck
