  • Patent number: 5604270
Abstract: A simplified aqueous sizing composition utilizing a variety of components achieves improved stability, wettability and strength characteristics. The composition utilizes one or more aqueous, soluble, dispersible or emulsifiable bisphenol A type polyester film forming polymers with an epoxy containing film forming copolymer compatible with and soluble in the matrix polymer. One or more organo-silane coupling agents are also utilized. The sizing composition preferably includes a single nonionic surfactant in conjunction with a cationic amidated polyamine lubricant. One or more anti-static agents, generally cationic organic quaternary ammonium salts having one or more alkoxy moieties, are utilized in an effective anti-static amount. An anti-foaming agent may also be utilized for the prevention or suppression of foam during the mixing process. The improved stability and wettability characteristics of the aqueous sizing composition are preferably achieved through the use of a single epoxidized surfactant.

  • Patent number: 5219656
Abstract: A unique composition of matter useful for treating glass fibers is claimed containing a film forming polymer, an organo coupling agent, a filament lubricant and an allylic compound, such as triallylcyanurate. The glass fibers carrying the dried residue of an aqueous chemical treating composition containing the unique chemical treating composition can be used to prepare a thermosetting plastic composite having improved strength. The composites so prepared are useful in making clear, translucent panels of improved weatherability and pultrusion profiles having higher strengths, such as compressive, shear and flexural strengths.

  • Patent number: 4900857
Abstract: New phosphorus-containing organo functional silane are produced through reactions such as condensation or Michael's addition reactions of hydroxyl-containing and/or methylol-containing phosphorus compounds and organo-functional silanes having at least one active hydrogen associated with a nitrogen in the organo moiety or an isocyanato, anhydride, alkene or epoxy moiety. The reaction can be conducted at a temperature in the range of around less than ambient to around 150.degree. C. with or without a solvent in a molar ratio of around 1:1 to around 1:4 of the phosphorus-containing compound to the silane.

  • Patent number: 4806620
Abstract: An aqueous, resinous solution of a curable, polymeric reaction product, the cured polymeric flame resistant coating and methods for producing them are provided. The solution is formed by direct reaction or prepolymer reaction and chain extension reaction of a methylol and/or hydroxyl-containing quaternary phosphonium compound, divalent nitrogen-containing compound and a heteroatom-containing compound. A nitrogen-containing compound has at least 2 active hydrogen and/or methylol radicals. The direct or prepolymer reaction has present a tertiary amine.

  • Patent number: 4784918
Abstract: Improved flame retardant coatings are produced from curable chemical mixtures having at least one phosphorus-containing film former which has hydroxyl and/or methylol functionalities, and at least one nucleophilic organo silane. The silane is capable of undergoing nucleophilic reaction with hydroxyl radical displacement and/or capable of Michael's addition type of reaction via a nucleophilic phosphine compound. Additionally, the curable chemical mixture can involve an interaction polymeric product of the phosphorus-containing film former and nucleophilic organo silane. Also solvents such as water, curing agents, fillers and/or extenders may be present in the mixture.
