  • Patent number: 7513033
Abstract: An apparatus for workpiece assembly is disclosed. In the illustrated embodiment, the apparatus includes a carousel which rotates between a plurality of assembly stations for assembly. Workpieces are loaded onto or unloaded from the carousel at a load/unload station and the carousel rotates to position workpieces proximate to the plurality of assembly stations. As illustrated workpieces are loaded into a plurality of assembly nests on the carousel. The plurality of assembly nests include alignment fingers rotatable with the plurality of assembly nests or carousel to align components, for example to align discs of a hydrodynamic spindle assembly for merge operations.

  • Patent number: 7371041
Abstract: Method and apparatus for forming and unloading a completed stack of articles. An assembly station includes a rotatable turret from which at least one stacker arm projects. The turret rotates to each of a number of article loading positions to sequentially load articles onto the arm in a desired order. The turret is then advanced to allow the articles to be concurrently unloaded from the stacker arm at an unloading position. In an automated disc drive manufacturing environment, the articles comprise respective numbers of magnetic recording discs and intervening disc spacers which are arranged into a disc/spacer stack as the stacker arm is advanced to a number of disc feeder and spacer feeder stations. The completed disc/spacer stack is then unloaded onto a spindle motor hub. Additional arms preferably project from the turret so that, as the turret rotates, multiple stacks are simultaneously formed and sequentially unloaded.

  • Patent number: 7293351
Abstract: An apparatus for protecting and merging a head stack assembly with a disc stack of a data storage device. The head stack assembly comprises a cantilevered flexure which supports a transducer at a distal end thereof. A carrier includes a carrier support surface arranged to contactingly support the distal end of the flexure. A merge tool is adapted to merge the transducer with a recording surface of the disc stack. The merge tool includes a merge support surface arranged to contactingly support a medial portion of the flexure while the carrier support surface is disposed between the merge support surface and the transducer. The transducer is merged by aligning the merge support surface with the medial portion of the flexure, and using the merge support surface to displace the distal end of the flexure from the carrier support surface and advance the transducer to a final position.

  • Patent number: 6959487
Abstract: A head disc merge assembly for merging an actuator with a disc stack having a disc, the actuator assembly having a flexure supporting a data transducer head, the head disc merge assembly including a merge comb having a flexure support member to support the flexure away from the disc while positioning the data transducer bead on the disc. A merge comb inspection station is provided having a body with a certification slot. The merge comb is moved into engagement with the certification slot, and successful passage there through indicates that the merge comb has an acceptable clearance condition for continued use at the merge station, while an unsuccessful passage through the certification slot indicates that the merge comb has an unacceptable non-clearance condition, and the electrical continuity check circuit is activated to stop the merge station for replacement of the merge comb.

  • Patent number: 6947253
Abstract: A method for balancing a spindle assembly for compensating for dynamic imbalance of the spindle assembly. The method uses a plurality of adjustable eccentric rings for dynamically balancing the spindle assembly. The plurality of eccentric rings are preassembled with the spindle assembly and the method includes the steps of measuring an imbalance of a combination of the spindle assembly and the eccentric rings preassembled with the spindle assembly and balancing the spindle assembly by adjusting the eccentric rings based upon a measured imbalance of the combination of the spindle assembly and the eccentric rings.

  • Patent number: 6877215
Abstract: A compliance mechanism for manipulating a control object by an end effector supported by a robotic arm. The robotic arm is supported by a combination of linear slides for two-axis freedom of movement. A locking arm is attached to the robotic arm and the locking arm is moveable between a locked and an unlocked position. The locking arm is biased in the locked position to restrict movement of the robotic arm along the two axes. A plunger extends adjacent the end effector. Upon engagement with an alignment feature associated with the control object, the plunger moves the locking arm from the locked to the unlocked position, thereby introducing compliance along the two axes manipulation of the control object.
