    Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for reducing DC offsets in a communication system are described. In a first aspect, a feedback loop circuit reduces DC offset in a wireless local area network (WLAN) receiver channel. The frequency response of the feedback loop circuit can be variable. In a second aspect, a circuit provides gain control in a WLAN receiver channel. First and second automatic gain control (AGC) amplifiers are coupled in respective portions of the receiver channel. Circuits for monitoring DC offset, and for providing control signals for controlling the frequency response of the DC offset reducing circuits are also provided.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for reducing DC offsets in a communication system are described. In a first aspect, a feedback loop circuit reduces DC offset in a wireless local area network (WLAN) receiver channel. The frequency response of the feedback loop circuit can be variable.     Abstract: Frequency translation and applications of the same are described herein, including RF modem and wireless local area network (WLAN) applications. In embodiments, the WLAN invention includes an antenna, an LNA/PA module, a receiver, a transmitter, a control signal generator, a demodulation/modulation facilitation module, and a MAC interface. The WLAN receiver includes at least one universal frequency translation module that frequency down-converts a received EM signal. In embodiments, the UFT based receiver is configured in a multi-phase embodiment to reduce or eliminate re-radiation that is caused by DC offset. The WLAN transmitter includes at least one universal frequency translation module that frequency up-converts a baseband signal in preparation for transmission over the wireless LAN. In embodiments, the UFT based transmitter is configured in a differential and multi-phase embodiment to reduce carrier insertion and spectral growth.

Briefly stated, in embodiments the invention operates by receiving an EM signal and recursively operating on approximate half cycles (½, 1½, 2½, etc.) of the carrier signal. The recursive operations can be performed at a sub-harmonic rate of the carrier signal. The invention accumulates the results of the recursive operations and uses the accumulated results to form a down-converted signal. In an embodiment, the EM signal is down-converted to an intermediate frequency (IF) signal. In another embodiment, the EM signal is down-converted to a baseband information signal. In another embodiment, the EM signal is a frequency modulated (FM) signal, which is down-converted to a non-FM signal, such as a phase modulated (PM) signal or an amplitude modulated (AM) signal.

    Abstract: A method and system is described wherein a signal with a lower frequency is up-converted to a higher frequency. In one embodiment, the higher frequency signal is used as a stable frequency and phase reference. In another embodiment, the invention is used as a transmitter. The up-conversion is accomplished by controlling a switch with an oscillating signal, the frequency of the oscillating signal being selected as a sub-harmonic of the desired output frequency. When the invention is being used as a frequency or phase reference, the oscillating signal is not modulated, and controls a switch that is connected to a bias signal. When the invention is being used in the frequency modulation (FM) or phase modulation (PM) implementations, the oscillating signal is modulated by an information signal before it causes the switch to gate the bias signal.

    Abstract: Coherent detection of a received EM signal using universal frequency translation (UFT) is described herein. The received EM signal is sampled according to a sub-harmonic LO signal, where the LO signal is in frequency and phase coherence with the received EM signal. The coherent receiver includes a down-converter/demodulator and a synthesizer/loop filter that are both implemented using UFT technology. The down-converter/demodulator samples the EM input signal using a UFT module according to the coherent sub-harmonic LO signal that is generated by the synthesizer/loop filter. The synthesizer/loop filter generates the coherent LO signal using a phase detector, a loop filter, and an up-converter. The phase detector and up-converter are implemented using UFT modules.

    Abstract: A fast correlator transform (FCT) algorithm and methods and systems for implementing same, correlate an encoded data word (X0-XM-1) with encoding coefficients (C0-CM-1), wherein each of (X0-XM-1) is represented by one or more bits and each said coefficient is represented by one or more bits, wherein each coefficient has k possible states, and wherein M is greater than 1. In accordance with the invention, X0 is multiplied by each state (C0(0) through C0(k-1)) of the coefficient C0, thereby generating results X0C0(0) through X0C0(k-1). This is repeating for data bits (X1-XM-1) and corresponding coefficients (C1-CM-1), respectively. The results are grouped into N groups. Members of each of the N groups are added to one another, thereby generating a first layer of correlation results. The first layer of results is grouped and the members of each group are summed with one another to generate a second layer of results. This process is repeated as necessary until a final layer of results is generated.

    Abstract: A filter module for reducing a DC offset voltage in a radio frequency communication channel is described. A first capacitor is coupled between a first differential input node and a first differential output node. A second capacitor is coupled between a second differential input node and a second differential output node. An active variable resistor is coupled between the first differential output node and the second differential output node. The active variable resistor receives a control signal. The control signal adjusts the value of the active variable resistor, which adjusts the frequency response of the filter module. The rate at which the filter module reduces DC offset voltages is thereby adjusted. The filter module is also adaptable to single-ended applications.

    Abstract: A balanced transmitter up-converts a baseband signal directly from baseband-to-RF. The up-conversion process is sufficiently linear that no IF processing is required, even in communications applications that have stringent requirements on spectral growth. In operation, the balanced modulator sub-harmonically samples the baseband signal in a balanced and differential manner, resulting in harmonically rich signal. The harmonically rich signal contains multiple harmonic images that repeat at multiples of the sampling frequency, where each harmonic contains the necessary information to reconstruct the baseband signal. The differential sampling is performed according to a first and second control signals that are phase shifted with respect to each other. In embodiments of the invention, the control signals have pulse widths (or apertures) that operate to improve energy transfer to a desired harmonic in the harmonically rich signal.

    Abstract: A quadrature signal generator receives a differential input signal and generates quadrature output signals that are 90 degrees out-of-phase with each other. The quadrature generator includes a coarse stage and a plurality of refinement stages. The coarse stage generates quadrature signals that may have some phase error, and the refinement stages process the quadrature signals to reduce any phase error. The refinement stages receive quadrature signals from the output of the coarse stage, and processes the quadrature signals to reduce the phase errors. The coarse stage and the refinement stages are configured using delay circuits that can be implemented with inverter circuits, such as, for example, CMOS inverter circuits. In the refinement stages, corresponding outputs of the delay stages are averaged together to reduce the quadrature phase error.
