  • Publication number: 20240387845
Abstract: The disclosure relates to an integrated fuel cell system designed to enhance operational efficiency and reduce complexity. The system incorporates a high-temperature proton exchange membrane (HT-PEM) fuel cell coupled with a novel reformer that utilizes cathode exhaust from the fuel cell. This exhaust provides both oxidant and water vapor necessary for the reforming process, thereby eliminating the need for separate humidification and simplifying the gas purification steps typically required to remove carbon monoxide. The reformer is capable of operating under conditions of catalytic partial oxidation (cPOx), autothermal reforming (ATR), and water gas shift (WGS) reactions. This integration facilitates a more compact design, reduces the weight of the system, and enhances overall efficiency by effectively managing heat and reducing carbon monoxide levels in the hydrogen feed. The system is particularly suited for mobile applications where space and weight are critical constraints.
