  • Patent number: 4303581
Abstract: Water based primer-surfacer compositions for application in the automotive industry over bare or treated metal and under a top coat of acrylic lacquer or enamel are formulated in aqueous medium using a latex of an addition copolymer prepared by emulsion polymerization of a mixture of styrenic and acrylic monomers, with hydroxyl and carboxyl functionality, preferably a mixture of styrene, ethyl acrylate, 2-hydroxy-ethyl methacrylate and acrylic acid. The latex is the predominant film forming ingredient in the composition and is combined with minor amounts of other film forming ingredients including a water soluble epoxy ester, preferably derived from bisphenol A, diglycidyl ether, drying oil fatty acids and maleic anhydride and water soluble or dispersible aminoplast resins, preferably methoxylated melamine formaldehyde resin and butoxylated urea formaldehyde resin. Pigments are also normally present in the composition.

  • Patent number: 3965058
Abstract: Ungelled thermosetting products are produced by reacting an amine-aldehyde condensate, such as malamine-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resin, with a polyfunctional material containing both hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. Preferred polyfunctional materials include di(hydroxyaryl) alkylidene carboxylic acids. Water-dispersed compositions in which the vehicle comprises such reaction products alone or in combination with other resins are applied by electrodeposition.

  • Patent number: 3945963
Abstract: A coating composition comprising an emulsion of a partially-solubilized polymeric binder in water; wherein the polymeric binder comprises:A. from about 25 to about 75 percent by weight of an acrylic interpolymer derived from an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate ester, an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and, optionally, at least one other copolymerizable ethylenically-unsaturated monomer, wherein at least part of the acid carboxylic groups have been iminated with an alkylenimine; andB. from about 25 to about 75 percent by weight of polymer solids of an epoxy resin. These compositions, depending on their precise formulation, can be used as protective coatings, primers, primer-surfacers, and sealer compositions for metallic substrates.
