The method is characterized in that values of correcting variables are read out from a further characteristic map, which is at least partially an inverted characteristic map with respect to the first characteristic map, which are predefined such that specified maximum values of the component temperature are not exceeded for the component through which the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine flows.
