  • Publication number: 20160149836
Abstract: A real-time rich communications (“RTC”) architecture consolidates a SIP/IMS framework and other frameworks for the desired communication and messaging services into a RTC host, which functions like a client to a SIP/IMS core in an IMS network, but which functions like a server to any number of RTC client devices over any number and any type of RTC capable networks. Advantageously, the RTC host may manage the RTC functions in the RTC clients without requiring support from any network infrastructure. Advantageously, the frameworks may be but need not necessarily be modular to facilitate design flexibility, modification, and upgrade. Advantageously, an RTC client may be a thin client.

  • Patent number: 9152478
Abstract: A distributed services modular client architecture may be used to implement IP-based real time communication services in a flexible manner among a wide variety of different types of chip sets and systems-on-chip. The various services are distributed among one or more processor cores, at least one of which is a low power core, in accordance with a number of factors, including power consumption, media latency, on-time, performance, and other considerations. A processor “core” may refer to a processor itself where the processor has only a single core, and may also refer to a “core” of a multicore processor. The architecture uses a SIP/IMS framework, and is modularized by placing certain services into their own framework so that a particular service may be plugged into the SIP/IMS framework if and when desired, and otherwise omitted.

  • Publication number: 20140348044
Abstract: A distributed services modular client architecture may be used to implement IP-based real time rich communication (“RTC”) services with any type of RTC-enabled digital device and a virtual RTC client on the cloud. The services may be distributed among the RTC-enabled digital device and the virtual RTC client. The architecture may distribute signaling and medial exchange plane functions among the RTC-enabled digital device and the virtual RTC client. The architecture may use a SIP/IMS framework, and may be modularized by placing certain services into their own framework so that a particular service may be plugged into the SIP/IMS framework or omitted. The frameworks may be installed in a virtual machine in the cloud, or divided between the device and the virtual machine, depending upon the device capabilities and to allow optimal media processing and transport. Some of the frameworks may be replicated on both the device and the virtual machine.

  • Publication number: 20120187184
Abstract: The techniques described herein facilitate the reliable and widespread communication of information in support of various types of transactions at various types of facilities using personal electronic devices, which are electronic devices that can be easily carried on the person. Personal electronic devices may be enabled to access and communicate information using Near Field Communications (“NFC”), as well as to communicate information to bar code scanners by emitting light that simulates a reflection of a scanning beam being moved across a static visual image of a bar code. Such a personal electronic device may be used for transactions both at the relatively uncommon facilities which have the newer NFC systems as well as the many facilities which have the older bar code scanners, thereby enhancing its value to its user. Moreover, NFC and light-simulated bar codes may be used cooperatively on a personal electronic device to enable a variety of novel and useful methods of communicating information.

  • Patent number: 8172142
Abstract: A personal digital electronic device is provided with two enhancements, namely (a) an IR receiver and associated circuitry and software/firmware for mimicking a laser scanner operation, so that information existing in physical form with an associated bar code may be entered into the personal digital electronic device at the point of transaction; and (b) a radio receiver and associated circuitry and software/firmware to receive and process RDS feeds, so that offers, coupons and promotions embedded in the RDS feeds may be detected and used to place or update information on the personal digital electronic device. The personal digital electronic device is enabled for communication with a bar code scanner preferably using the “active light” communication technology.

  • Patent number: 6877665
Abstract: A system, method, and apparatus for communicating information in a light-based signal utilizing a fob device is disclosed. One method disclosed includes encoding transmission information data into a bar code format; generating a signal from the bar code format to simulate a reflection of a scanning beam being moved across a static visual image of the bar code format; and actively transmitting the signal as light pulses from the fob device. Alternatively, commercial information data may be transmitted to a light-based data receiving device by generating a signal from commercial information data and actively transmitting the signal as light pulses from a fob device. Transmission information data may also be transmitted from a fob device by generating a first signal from a first encoded format; generating a second signal from a second encoded format; transmitting the first signal as light pulses from a fob device; and transmitting the second signal from the fob device.

  • Publication number: 20040151158
Abstract: A notification channel based approach is used for near real time data streaming for voice. The notification channel also is used to carry small data payloads. The solution preferably includes three elements. The first element involves taking the voice input from the sender in small, digitized packets. The second element involves taking these time packets of voice data and sending them out in a sequential manner over the notification channel. At the receiving end these packets of voice data are played back through the codec supported by the platform as they are received. The third element lies in the fact that the notifications can be sent to as many recipients as required. This allows the sender to broadcast voice messages to a group of people and to implement a conference.

  • Patent number: 6736322
Abstract: A user is provided with a secure database containing information in diverse categories that relates to the user and that may be represented at least in part in bar code form and communicated with light from a mobile communications device. The diverse information is obtained from any combination of a variety of vendor and governmental computer systems, internet service providers, and communications devices. The user has access to the database using a mobile communications device for displaying, managing, and entering information, and for communicating information in bar code form with light. The user first selects the category that contains the specific item of information, and then selects the specific item of information. The specific item of information then is communicated in bar code form with light from the mobile communications device for scanning by a bar code scanner to obtain the desired good or service.

  • Patent number: 6691233
Abstract: A handwriting capture system includes a portable electronic tablet that capture pen strokes made on a standard pad of paper and transfer the captured pen strokes to a digital image capture device such as a personal data assistant or PDA using infrared communications circuitry. The portable electronic tablet is battery powered, and the handwriting capture system includes an infrared activated power switch to extend the useful lifetime of the battery by power up the electronic tablet and infrared communications circuitry only when the system is in use and otherwise by powering off the electronic tablet and much of the communications circuitry, in a manner that is entirely transparent to the user. An IR activity detector remains powered up when the system generally is powered off, and also furnishes power to at least the receiver section of the IR transceiver.

  • Patent number: 5862099
Abstract: A computer system includes a computing device such as a microcontroller and a memory device. The memory device is illustratively a serial device connected to the serial port of the microcontroller. The memory device includes a page latch load circuit which provides serial I/O to the microcontroller and transfers I/O bits in a predetermined order to/from the page latches. Page latches are connected over many bit lines to a memory cell array. The page latches not only supports programming and reading of sectors in the memory cell array, but also provides one or more of the following functions: directly accessible to the microcontroller as an SRAM scratch pad, directly loadable from the memory cell array to facilitate single byte "read-modify-write" operations, and loadable during programming operations to support real time applications.
