  • Patent number: 5739724
Abstract: An oscillator supplies a signal of adjustable frequency to drive power ultrasonic actuators. The oscillator frequency is varied and the phase between the voltage and current of the signal is continuously measured. A computer determines the sign of the variation in the absolute value of the phase in the course of successive sampling cycles of predetermined duration and produces therefrom frequency correction signals for the oscillator. A frequency correction is applied to the oscillator in the same direction as the frequency correction applied previously if the variation in absolute value of the phase is negative, and in the opposite direction if the variation in absolute value of the phase is positive. If the variation in absolute value of the phase is zero, a frequency correction of random sign is applied to the oscillator.

  • Patent number: 5558715
Abstract: The subject of the invention is a method for coating a metallurgical product, especially a steel product, in which said product is dipped into a bath of metallic alloy containing solid impurities, wherein said bath of alloy is exposed to sound vibration so as to accelerate the decantation of said impurities. The subject of the invention is also an installation for coating metallurgical products (3), especially steel products, of the type comprising a tank (1) containing a bath (2) of metallic alloy and means (4, 5) for dipping said products (3) into said bath of alloy, wherein it also comprises means (13, 14) for exposing said bath of alloy to sound vibration.

  • Patent number: 5441062
Abstract: The device comprises an ultrasonic wave emitter (4) whose lower end portion (5) is immersed in the reactive solution (2) in which a sheet (3) to be pickled is immersed, and this end portion is provided with two emitting plates (6,7) respectively positioned on each side of an edge portion of the sheet (3) with their planar emitting surfaces parallel to the sheet and contained in two antinodal planes. Consequently, the two plates (6,7) vibrate in phase opposition and, if the vibratory amplitude is sufficiently large, these vibrations create a cavitation in the liquid in the space between the surfaces (3a,3b) of the edge portion and the plates (6,7) which considerably accelerates the rate of removal of scale from the edge portion.

  • Patent number: 5355935
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the continuous casting of metals of the type according to which ultrasonic vibrations are applied to the wall of the ingot mould, characterized in that the vibrations comprise both a component which is oriented parallel to and a component which is oriented perpendicular to the axis of the ingot mould. This method is preferably implemented by applying at least one ultrasound emitter against a surface integral with one of the ends of the ingot mould and with an angle of inclination relative to the axis of the latter. The invention is principally applicable to the continuous casting of steel products of all sizes.

  • Patent number: 4662427
Abstract: A vibrating ingot mold for the continuous casting of metals, particularly of steel, comprising at least one ultrasonic transducer (8) mounted on the edge (20) of one end of the interal tubular element (14) of the mold, in an extension of that element, and oriented to transmit to that element the ultrasonic vibrations which it generates in a longitudinal direction, parallel or substantially parallel to the casting axis (A) in the mold. By reducing friction between the cast metal and the inner mold wall, the mold structure promotes lubrication and improves the quality of the surfaces of the cast products while reducing the danger of breakouts. It can be used with vertical, inclined, curved and horizontal continuous casting plants.
