  • Publication number: 20070191228
Abstract: A natural herbicide comprising a Burkholderia species cell-free culture fraction having herbicidal activity is provided. The natural herbicide may comprise a cell free fraction having a molecular weight less than about 5000 Daltons, less than 1000 Daltons, or a substantially purified compound having a molecular weight of about 192 Daltons or about 390 Daltons. A method of suppressing or controlling growth of a target plant by applying a composition comprising the natural herbicide is also provided, as is a method of producing a natural herbicide. The natural herbicide may be produced by obtaining a cell-free culture conditioned by growth of a Burkholderia species, fractionating the cell-free culture to obtain a fraction having herbicidal activity, and purifying the fraction having herbicidal activity to produce the natural herbicide.

  • Patent number: 7141407
Abstract: The present invention relates to the use of a strain of Burkholderia andropogonis for controlling the growth of a weed belonging to the order Caryophyllales. The present invention also provides a method for suppressing weed growth, comprising applying a strain of Burkholderia andropogonis to a weed belonging to the order Caryophyllales. Also provided is a biocontrol composition for controlling the growth of a weed belonging to the order Caryophyllales, the composition comprising a strain of Burkholderia andropogonis, and a suitable medium.

  • Patent number: 6686316
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a biocontrol agent Plectosporium tabacinum and methods for the biocontrol of weeds using the biocontrol agent. Preferably the weeds are cleavers (Galium aparine L and Galium spurium L.), and the biocontrol agent is Plectosporium tabacinum CL98-103 (ATCC deposit PTA-3463). The biocontrol agent is effective against herbicide-resistant and herbicide-susceptible cleavers, and it may be used in conjunction with other herbicides.
