Patent number: 7971428Abstract: An exhaust gas purification device for an internal combustion engine comprises, an exhaust passage including a catalyst for conveying exhaust gas discharged from the engine to the outside, and a bend formed by bending a portion of the exhaust passage directly upstream of the catalyst, the bend causing exhaust gas discharged from the engine to collide against a corner portion between an inlet end face of the catalyst and such portion of a wall of the exhaust passage that follows the outside of the bend, thereby increasing pressure at the corner portion, compared with the other portion of the inlet end face, and an additive injection valve fitted to the outside of the bend of the exhaust passage to inject an additive in such manner that the injected additive passes just above the corner portion and falls on the inlet end face of the catalytic converter.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 2008Date of Patent: July 5, 2011Assignees: Mitsubishi Jidosha Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha, Mitsubishi Jidosha Engineering Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Hiroyuki Kimura, Mitsutaka Kojima, Kojiro Okada, Kei Shigahara, Michihiro Hata, Kazuhito Kawashima, Kazuo Koga, Kazuto Maehara, Hajime Ishii

Publication number: 20090158722Abstract: An emission control system, includes: an exhaust pipe portion, adapted to guide exhaust gas from an engine to outside; a catalyst, accommodated in the exhaust pipe portion; an additive injection valve, provided at the exhaust pipe portion located at upstream side of the catalyst, and configured to inject additives to be supplied to the catalyst toward a flow of the exhaust gas in the exhaust pipe portion. The exhaust pipe portion has a flow path section located at upstream side of the catalyst, which intersects an injection flow of the additives injected by the additive injection valve, and the flow path section is made to have substantially the same shape as an injection region of the injection flow which confronts the exhaust gas.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 23, 2008Publication date: June 25, 2009Inventors: Mitsutaka KOJIMA, Hiroyuki Kimura, Kojiro Okada, Kei Shigahara, Michihiro Hata, Kazuhito Kawashima, Kazuo Koga, Kazuto Maehara, Hajima Ishii

Patent number: 6782696Abstract: A low NOx combustion mode is executed in which the fuel injected timing IT is greatly advanced to 36° BTDC as compared with a normal value of roughly 10° BTDC. At this fuel injection timing IT, the smoke emission amount is suppressed below an extremely low value, even if the EGR ratio Regr is increased to about 56%, and the NOx emission amount is suppressed owing to a large amount of EGR, so that the smoke and NOx can be reduced at the same time.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2002Date of Patent: August 31, 2004Assignee: Mitsubishi Jidosha Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kei Shigahara, Michihiro Hata, Toshinori Morita, Noriyuki Koga, Yuji Yanagawa

Patent number: 5423300Abstract: An internal combustion engine according to this invention is provided with intake ports each of which is formed to guide a flow of inducted air in a particular direction. Each intake port includes, in the vicinity of its corresponding intake opening to a combustion chamber, a bent port portion bent at a greater curvature than a port portion on a side upstream of the bent port portion. The bent port portion has a greater inner diameter than the inner diameter of the corresponding intake opening, whereby air can be inducted in a sufficient amount without deterioration to the directing function for air to be inducted into the combustion chamber.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1993Date of Patent: June 13, 1995Assignee: Mitsubishi Jidosha Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Hiromitsu Ando, Osamu Hirako, Shogo Omori, Jun Takemura, Taizo Kitada, Katsuo Akishino, Yasuki Tamura, Michihiro Hata, Kinichi Iwachido, Masayuki Motomochi, Syunsuke Matsuo, Nobuaki Murakami, Keizo Furukawa

Patent number: 5417190Abstract: A stratified burning internal combustion engine according to this invention is equipped with an intake port and a fuel feed device so that stratified tumble flows of different fuel concentrations can be formed in a combustion chamber. An ignition device is provided in the combustion chamber to ignite at least one of the tumble flows, said at least one tumble flow being rich in fuel. To promote the stratified tumble flows, a top wall of a piston has an inclined wall. This makes it possible to strengthen the tumble flows, whereby the stratification of an air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber can be improved further to permit lean burn at a larger air/fuel ratio.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1993Date of Patent: May 23, 1995Assignee: Mitsubishi Jidosha Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Hiromitsu Ando, Osamu Hirako, Shogo Omori, Jun Takemura, Taizo Kitada, Katsuo Akishino, Yasuki Tamura, Michihiro Hata, Kinichi Iwachido, Masayuki Motomochi, Syunsuke Matsuo, Nobuaki Murakami, Keizo Furukawa

Patent number: 5295464Abstract: An internal combustion engine according to this invention is provided with intake ports and an injector. The intake ports are designed to form stratified tumble flows of different fuel concentrations in a combustion chamber. A spark plug is arranged in the combustion chamber to ignite one of the tumble flows, which one tumble flow is rich in fuel. Each intake port is provided with a longitudinal partition which divides an interior of the intake port into two passages. These longitudinal partitions are formed in such a way that, of the air-fuel tumble flows formed around the spark plug, the tumble flow closest to the spark plug is formed of a richer air-fuel mixture. Each longitudinal partition is arranged only on a side upstream of a valve stem of an intake valve in the corresponding intake port, so that a sufficient amount of intake air can be obtained while extremely minimizing a reduction in the actual cross-sectional flow area.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1993Date of Patent: March 22, 1994Assignee: Mitsubishi Jidosha Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Hiromitsu Ando, Osamu Hirako, Shogo Omori, Jun Takemura, Taizo Kitada, Katsuo Akishino, Yasuki Tamura, Michihiro Hata, Kinichi Iwachido, Masayuki Motomochi, Syunsuke Matsuo, Nobuaki Murakami, Keizo Furukawa
