Abstract: A method and wireless device for providing position information as provided enables increased control by the wireless device of location services. The method includes processing a location services request at the wireless device. In response to the location services request, a preferred schedule for location update messages is then determined at the wireless device, where the preferred schedule is based on at least one operating parameter of the wireless device. Location update messages are then transmitted from the wireless device according to the preferred schedule.
