  • Publication number: 20170307474
Abstract: This invention relates to a system and method to determine the distributed birefringence profile along an optical fibre. Birefringence manifests as different refractive indices for two orthogonal states of polarization of the light propagating in the optical fibre. The technique is based on the correlation among sets of measurements acquired using phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (?OTDR), launching light into the fibre with multiple states of polarization. The correlation between the measurements performed while sweeping the laser frequency gives a resonance (correlation) peak at a frequency detuning that is proportional to the refractive index difference between the two orthogonal polarizations. This enables measurements of the local value of the phase birefringence at any position along the optical fibre, so that longitudinal fluctuations of its value can be evaluated.

  • Patent number: 9729711
Abstract: Methods and systems for detecting unintentional calls placed to a call center. In some implementations, a device with telephone capability recognizes that it is being used to place a call, and automatically collects information usable to estimate whether the call is intentional or unintentional. The device may make the estimate, or may send the collected information to the recipient of the call. When a call is estimated to be unintentional, the device may signal the user of the device, or may inform the recipient of the call that the call is suspected to be unintentional, or both. The collected information may include outputs from one or more sensors, such as an accelerometer, a microphone, a camera, or a biometric sensor. A button press initiating a call may be considered in the context of other usage of the device to estimate whether the call was intentional or unintentional.

  • Publication number: 20170038491
Abstract: A method and device are described for making in situ measurements of the density and viscosity of downhole fluids at subterranean wells. An oscillator circuit is deployed in the well comprising an amplifier, a feedback loop, and an electromechanical resonator. The electromechanical resonator is a component in the feedback loop of the oscillator circuit, and has a resonance mode that determines the frequency of the oscillator circuit. The electromechanical resonator is also in contact with the fluid such that the density and viscosity of the fluid influence the resonant frequency and damping of the resonator. The frequency of the oscillator is measured by a microcontroller. In one embodiment, the oscillator circuit periodically stops driving the electromechanical resonator such that the oscillation decays and the rate of decay is also measured by the microcontroller. The density and viscosity of the fluid are determined from the frequency and rate of decay of the oscillation.
