  • Publication number: 20060259951
Abstract: A data processing mechanism is disclosed for selection of a communication interface for a communication device from a plurality of communication interfaces provided by a communication system. The mechanism comprises a first controller entity for executing a first selection routine for considering at least one first policy on communication via the communication system, and a second controller entity for executing a second selection routine for considering at least one second policy on communication via the communication system. The at least one second policy is related to a different aspect of communication than the at least one first policy. The data processing mechanism is configured to select the communication interface based on outputs of the first selection routine and the second selection routine.

  • Patent number: 7123595
Abstract: For transferring packets between a wireless data transfer device and a mobile communication network, temporary block flows are formed, and information is transferred in these block flows in one or more packet data traffic channels either in the first direction from the mobile communication network to the wireless data transfer device or in the second direction from the wireless data transfer device to the mobile communication network. In the method, information about the end of the block flow is set in a packet to be transmitted in a block flow when data transfer has stopped. When the transfer of packets in the first direction has stopped, at least one enquiry message is also sent from the mobile communication network to the wireless data transfer device.

  • Patent number: 7054268
Abstract: A method as described by which an application executing in an application layer of a multi-layer communication protocol forming part of a general packet radio service (GPRS) session can signal for the setup and release of Temporary Block Flow (TBF) which will not be released during application execution in silent (inactive) periods. When applications such as voice, telnet or web browsing have specific traffic type data that have inactive periods between active periods are to be carried over GPRS, the session consists of multiple active periods. Current TBF release procedures lead to multiple TBF setups during such sessions. With the method described, a special type of TBF can be set up with special procedures for release of this TBF which greatly minimizes the need for multiple TBF setups during a session containing data transfers with inactive periods between active data transmissions.

  • Patent number: 6944459
Abstract: The invention relates generally to a method and an arrangement for transferring information in a packet radio service. Especially the invention applies to transferring delay sensitive data, such as speech and video data, in a mobile cellular telecommunications system. It is an object of this invention to provide a solution, in which the physical connection of a packet radio service is kept reserved also during the passive periods of a session but the same physical resource can still be shared between multiple users. In the present solution after the end of an active period of data transmission a predetermined time period is waited until the connection is released. The length of the time period is informed to the mobile station by the network on a dedicated or on a broadcast channel. The length of the time period is preferably made dependent on the required quality of service value of the connection and on the momentary communication activity in the network or cell.

  • Patent number: 6870820
Abstract: A method of transmitting data in a packet radio network to a mobile station performing a routing area update. The packet radio network transmits data to the mobile station via a first support node. The mobile station sends a routing area update message to a second support node, which sends to the first support node a request for context data of the mobile station from the first support node. The first support node sends from its memory, end user data addressed to the mobile station to the second support node. It then waits for a predetermined period of time before sending the end user data to the second support node. The predetermined time may be fixed, depending preferably on the quality of service of the connection used by the mobile station. Alternatively the predetermined period of time expires when the second support note sends to the first support node a separate acknowledgement message indicating that the second support node has received the context data of the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6771659
Abstract: A modified unacknowledge mode of a telecommunications system interface is defined by providing for a special signaling indication by way of a selected packet, signaling sequence, message, or the like, from a transmitting side to a receiving side that a given message, packet, cell, signaling sequence, or the like is to be treated specially, despite the unacknowledge mode being used, by acknowledging receipt thereof at the receiving side back to the transmitting side. In this way, certain important messages can be acknowledged, while less important messages can be sent without acknowledgement. This reduces the need for wasteful use of capacity for applications in which some of the messages are more important than others to be received correctly.

  • Publication number: 20040090948
Abstract: A GPRS system comprises a plurality of mobile terminals and a GPRS network. In order to obtain uplink radio resources, the mobile terminals send channel requests to the network and receive control blocks in return. The control blocks contain a number of fields, one of which, the uplink state flag field, contains the sending permissions. In order to extend the numbering space of the uplink state flag field, unused bits present in another field are used.

  • Patent number: 6718179
Abstract: A method is presented for establishing a continued communication connection after a terminating communication connection between a transmitting station and a receiving station in a communication system where communication connections take place on dedicated communication resources temporarily associated to them. The termination of the terminating communication connection is indicated through a communication resource associated to the terminating communication connection (304, 404, 405, 504). The need for a continued communication connection is also indicated through a dedicated communication resource (305, 408, 408′, 509).

  • Patent number: 6683860
Abstract: The invention relates generally to a method and an arrangement for transferring information in a packet radio service. The invention further concerns the technology of allocating resources for individual radio connections at the interface between a transmitting device and a receiving device, especially the allocation of radio resources for a packet-switched radio connection. According to the invention a new TBF is created (306) e.g. when data transfer requires a change of communication parameters (305), and thus there are no pauses in the data transfer due to the release procedures of the existing TBF. The inventive solution saves network resources and facilitates providing simultaneously different services, such as transferring IP telephony and Mobility Management messages.

  • Publication number: 20020105940
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for arranging the transmission of packets between a mobile communication device (MS) and a mobile communication network (NW). In the method, at least one temporary block flow (UL TBF, DL TBF) is set up, in which data is transmitted in packets in one or more packet data traffic channels (PDTCH) in a first direction from the mobile communication device (MS) to the mobile communication network (NW). At the end of the transmission in the block flow, information is set in the last packet (307) to be transmitted about the end of the block flow, wherein the receiver of the packets acknowledges (312) the reception of the packets. In the method, after the end of the transmission of packets in said first direction, a determined time is waited until an acknowledgement (312) is transmitted.
