  • Publication number: 20120113903
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer program for protecting transmissions are provided. A wireless communication apparatus receives a physical layer convergence protocol header of a transmission on a frequency band and determines from header information included in the header, whether or not there are further transmissions associated with the transmission and after the transmission on the frequency band. In response to determining on the basis of the header information that there will be at least one other transmission after the transmission on the frequency band, channel access of the wireless communication apparatus is suspended on the frequency band for a determined time period after the transmission, the determined time period including a transmission time interval of the at least one other transmission.

  • Patent number: 8156229
Abstract: A wireless device transmits beacon packets at periodically occurring time intervals across a wireless channel. When the wireless communications device has not formed a piconet with one or more remote devices, the device scans the wireless channel for a predetermined amount of time immediately following each of the periodically occurring time intervals. During this time a remote device may respond to the beacon packet.

  • Publication number: 20120052802
Abstract: Method, apparatus, and computer program product enable devices to advertise an existing connection to other devices so that they can synchronize to the connection and listen to the information exchanged, in a listen-only mode. In example embodiments, after a slave device has joined a piconet by completing a connection with a master device using for example the Bluetooth Low Energy protocol, the slave device possesses all of the information needed to advertise the existing connection to other devices so that they can synchronize to the connection and listen to the information exchanged, in a listen-only mode. The slave device may assume the role of an advertiser of the existing connection and may begin transmitting an advertising channel packet/PDU to inform third party devices about the existing connection.

  • Patent number: 8116694
Abstract: A system for configuring antenna systems for selecting directional communication signals corresponding to other apparatuses. Apparatuses having activities that require directional wireless communication may search for other apparatuses that can fulfill these requirements. This search may include, for example, the transmission of wireless messages requesting a set of communication beams usable for beam training (for example, one or more beam training sequences). Other apparatuses that are able to satisfy the requirements of the searching apparatus may respond to the request message by transmitting a message that comprises at least information usable for configuring beam training configuration in the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 8107968
Abstract: A system for managing the simultaneous operation of a plurality of radio modems in a single wireless communication device (WCD). The multiradio control may be integrated into the WCD as a subsystem responsible for scheduling wireless communications by temporarily enabling or disabling the plurality of radio modems within the device. The multiradio control system may comprise a multiradio controller (MRC) and a plurality dedicated radio interfaces. The radio interfaces are dedicated to quickly conveying delay sensitive information to and from the radio modems. The modems may further include control features that take information from the MRC as an input in determining the priority of messages to be sent out to a receiving device. Uplink and/or downlink operations might, for instance, be performed. Instruction that operation can commence prior to an assigned time period might, for example, be provided. Channel contention might, for instance, be initiated in response to the instruction.

  • Publication number: 20120008599
Abstract: In one embodiment, in absence of transmitting from an apparatus a reservation request frame, the apparatus receives a reservation response frame on an assigned channel. The reservation response frame indicates a duration of a frame transmission. In response to receiving the reservation response frame, the apparatus transmits a frame on the assigned channel during the frame transmission. In another embodiment, in response to receiving a reservation request frame on a first channel at an apparatus, the apparatus transmits a reservation response frame on the first channel and on at least one second channel. The reservation request frame indicates a duration of a frame transmission. The reservation response frame indicates the duration of the frame transmission. After transmitting the reservation response frame, this apparatus receives during the frame transmission a first frame on the primary channel and a second frame on the at least one secondary channel.

  • Publication number: 20120008604
Abstract: A system for managing the enablement of beaconing in apparatuses operating in reallocated bandwidth corresponding to a geographic area. For example, apparatuses may initially determine whether they desire to operate as beaconing-type apparatuses or non-beaconing-type apparatuses. The apparatuses may then transmit enablement request frames comprising at least apparatus identification information and the previously determined desired beaconing or non-beaconing apparatus type. Apparatuses may then receive enablement request frames that at least designate the apparatuses as first tier beaconing apparatuses, second tier beaconing apparatuses or non-beaconing apparatuses. The apparatuses may then proceed to configure themselves based on the enablement information.

  • Publication number: 20110305206
Abstract: Method, apparatus, and computer program product embodiments are disclosed for independent wireless resource sharing on a fair basis to enable selecting the most suitable coexistence between wireless networks. Example embodiments of the invention include a hierarchical resource request process that enables reallocation of radio resources in a coexistence band. When new resources are requested by a network, a search is made for free resources in the coexistence band. If this does not succeed, a check is made for any allocated but unused resources in the coexistence band that have been advertised by neighboring networks. If there are insufficient advertised resources, then the allocation of resources in neighboring networks is analyzed and compared with the requesting network's need for network resources. There are two graduated stages to the analysis.

  • Publication number: 20110263209
Abstract: A system for quiet period determination. An apparatus may listen for potential silent periods to occur in an environment, and if detected, the potential silent periods may be compared to quiet period criteria to determine if they are actual silent periods. If at least two subsequent actual silent periods are determined, the apparatus may adopt quiet period timing and duration based on the actual silent periods. Alternatively, the apparatus may establish new quiet period timing and duration based on the quiet period criteria.

  • Publication number: 20110222408
Abstract: Method, apparatus, and computer program product embodiments are disclosed to enhance capacity of a wireless communication network through spatial reuse of the shared communication medium, using an autonomous parallel operation without central coordination and header frames. Example embodiments of the invention include a signaling method that defines and sets up a Simultaneous Transmissions mode between two pairs of devices to reuse a transmission opportunity (TXOP). In example embodiments of the invention, an arrangement may be made between device pairs (each pair comprising a transmitter device and a receiver device) to allow selected pairs to communicate at a same time. The example signaling method defines example signaling for setting up simultaneous transmitter/receiver pairs in a network and operating the transmitter/receiver pairs in simultaneous transmission.

  • Patent number: 8005465
Abstract: A system for conveying wireless information between an advertising device (advertiser) and another wireless communication device (receiving device). The advertiser's broadcast signal (advertisement) may inform the receiving device that information is available from the advertiser without the requirement of establishing a formal network connection. This information may be then be conveyed, by request, to the receiving device. Further, the advertising device may, in some instances, continue to broadcast to other receiving devices even though it is already engaged in a formal network connection with a receiving device.
