  • Patent number: 6798757
Abstract: A session for a mobile station is established by finding a route and determining the availability of resources on the route. Thereafter, active per-hop behaviors (PHB's) are distributed to ports along the route while inactive PHB's are distributed to ports near the route. The active and inactive PHB's provide information on how to route, transport, and process packets belonging to a session. In one embodiment, each of the PHB's indicates a priority level, forwarding port number, rules for discarding packets, rules for sending packets, etc. The packets are transported from one port to another in accordance with the active PHB's, thereby guaranteeing a level of quality of service (QoS). When the mobile station moves to a new location and changes the route, inactive PHB's are activated on the new route. This not only allows mobile stations to communicate at a certain level of QoS even after a move, but also minimizes the delay resulting from the move.

  • Patent number: 6731621
Abstract: A plurality of packet gate ways (PGWS) are connected between a mobile communication system and an internet so that the corresponding IP subnetworks to those PGWs may be built. A visitor location register (VLR) operates to notify the PGW of location information of the mobile station (MS) and an IP address of a data terminal connected with the MS. If the notified IP address belongs to another IP subnetwork, the PGW notifies the corresponding PGW to that IP subnetwork of a fact that the local PGW is a destination. The PGW operates to manage the location information of the MS connected with the data terminal based on the notified content and perform the packet routing based on the managed content.

  • Patent number: 6307857
Abstract: An asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) controller includes a buffer memory, a transfer circuit which transfers packet data between the buffer memory and an internal memory of an associative terminal unit with a data block of predetermined length being a unit therefor, a cell transmit circuit section that subdivides or “slices” the predetermined length data block sent from the terminal memory to the buffer memory into data cells which are then sent forth to the ATM network, a cell receive control circuit operable to reconstruct or re-assemble those data cells received from the ATM network over a transfer path thereby forming in the buffer memory a predetermined length data block, and a transfer control circuit operable to permit or “instruct” the transfer circuit to transfer the predetermined length data block between the buffer memory and the terminal memory and also instruct both the cell transmit control circuit and the cell receive control circuit to transfer the data cells between the

  • Publication number: 20010031634
Abstract: A mobile communication system with a packet switching function which enables sharing of radio resources among mobile stations, wherein a mobile station which has generated a request for communication quality assurance periodically sends a packet for requesting preferential use of a radio channel in order to prevent timeout of the state transition timer, timeout of which would cancel radio channel assignment to the mobile station and bring it into a dormant state if a certain period elapses without transmission or reception of a signal, so that it can remain in the active state and hold the radio channel continuously. In addition, when the mobile station requesting communication quality assurance moves from one cell to another or requests radio channel assignment, the base station controller controls the radio base station so that the mobile station can be assigned a radio channel by sending a priority request packet.
