  • Patent number: 11913736
Abstract: A heater includes a flow guide and a plurality of electrical resistance heating elements. The flow guide defines a continuous geometric helicoid disposed about a longitudinal axis of the heater assembly. The flow guide defines a predetermined pattern of perforations that extend in a longitudinal direction through a first longitudinal length of the geometric helicoid, the longitudinal direction being parallel to the longitudinal axis. The plurality of electrical resistance heating elements extend through the perforations. At least one electrical resistance heating element of the plurality of electrical resistance heating elements has a first region with a first watt density and a second region with a second watt density. The second region is located farther in the longitudinal direction than the first region. The second watt density is less than the first watt density.

  • Patent number: 11330676
Abstract: A heater for use in heating a fluid flow through a passageway is provided that includes a continuous resistive heating element having a predefined shape that is directly exposed to the fluid flow. The predefined shape includes a cross-sectional geometry that provides a required heat distribution, structural strength, and reduced back pressure within the passageway. The predefined shape may include airfoils, while the cross-sectional geometry provides a required heat distribution, structural strength, and reduced back pressure within the passageway.

  • Patent number: 10669907
Abstract: A heater control module of the present disclosure controls exhaust temperature in an exhaust after treatment system. The heater control module includes a heating mode determination module and a heater operating module. The heating mode determination module is configured to select a desired heating mode from a plurality of heating modes based on an engine load and a status of a component of the exhaust aftertreatment system. The heater operating module is configured to operate an electric heater based on the desired heating mode. The plurality of modes includes at least a passive regeneration heating mode and an active regeneration heating mode. The electric heater is operated in the passive regeneration heating mode to heat an exhaust gas to a predetermined temperature to increase NO2 generation when an engine load is less than or equal to approximately 25%.

  • Patent number: 10036292
Abstract: A method of heating an exhaust gas in an exhaust after treatment system includes selecting a heating mode between a plurality of heating modes based on an engine load and a status of a component of the exhaust aftertreatment system. The method further comprises heating the exhaust gas by operating the electric heater in the selected heating mode, and operating the electric heater in a passive regeneration heating mode to heat an exhaust gas to a predetermined temperature to increase NO2 generation when an engine load is less than or equal to approximately 25%.

  • Patent number: 9115616
Abstract: A method of heating an exhaust gas in an exhaust aftertreatment system including a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) is provided. The method includes heating the exhaust gas to a predetermined temperature to increase NO2 generation in the DOC when the DPF is not actively regenerated, and heating the exhaust gas to reduce an exhaust temperature gradient when the DPF is actively regenerated. The exhaust temperature gradient is reduced by providing more heat proximate a wall of an exhaust conduit and less heat proximate a center of the exhaust conduit.
