  • Publication number: 20030070639
Abstract: A device for changing the control times of gas exchange valves of an internal combustion engine, particularly a rotary piston adjusting device for rotation angle adjustment of a camshaft relative to a crankshaft, which device is fastened by a central fastening screw to a camshaft mounted in the cylinder head of the internal combustion engine. The device includes a stator, in driving connection with the crankshaft and having two side covers, and of a rotor connected to rotate with the camshaft, with at least two hydraulic working spaces being formed in the stator by at least two radial boundary walls. The chambers are divided by at least two radial vanes on the rotor, respectively, into two hydraulic pressure chambers which work in opposition to one another. The stator and the one side cover of the device are formed as an integral stator unit, and the rotor and the other side cover are formed as an integral rotor unit.

  • Publication number: 20030037741
Abstract: A rotating piston positioning device to adjust the angle of rotation of a camshaft with respect to a crankshaft of an internal combustion engine. The device includes a drive member (5) that is driven by the crankshaft and a driven member (10) that is fixed to the camshaft (4). At least the driven member (10) of the device (1) is formed of a lightweight metal and is bolted to the camshaft (4) by a central fastening screw (13), whereas the drive member (5) is radially supported external to the driven member (10) and transfers force to the driven member by at least two hydraulic pressure chambers located inside the device (1). The conical zone of force from the fastening screw (13) to the driven member (10) is carried by a special collar (16) made of a compression-resistant material that at the same time is a prefabricated pressure medium distributor of the device (1).

  • Patent number: 6170447
Abstract: An internal sealing of a vane-type adjusting device comprising a drive pinion (2) connected to a crankshaft of an internal combustion engine by a toothed belt or a timing chain and has a hollow space (9) into which a winged wheel (13) is inserted and rotationally fixed to a camshaft of an internal combustion engine, the drive pinion (2) comprising on the inner surface of its circumferential wall (3) at least one working chamber (5), and the wings of the winged wheel (13) divide each working chamber (5) into two pressure chambers (10, 11) and to avoid pressure medium leakage between the pressure chambers (10, 11) of each working chamber (5) and between the individual working chambers (5), each wing of the winged wheel (13) is configured as a separate wing segment (18) which is displaceable within a guide (15) in the winged wheel (13) and is sealed leak-tight radially by the radial centrifugal force which results from the rotation of the vane-type adjusting device (1) during engine operation, and axially by at

  • Patent number: 6105544
Abstract: An apparatus (1) for changing the opening and closing times of gas exchange valves of an internal combustion engine has intercommunicating slide and freewheel means (15, 20). By means of these elements (15, 20), immediately upon starting the internal combustion engine, and adjusting piston (7) of the apparatus (1) is moved into its desired starting position and/or held there long enough for the apparatus (1) to be filled sufficiently with hydraulic fluid again. During the hydraulic-fluid-free state, the adjusting piston (7) is at the same time largely prevented from making any undesired oscillations.

  • Patent number: 6089198
Abstract: A device for varying the opening and closing times of gas exchange valves of an internal combustion engine, comprising a drive unit (2) which is in driving relationship with a crankshaft through a traction element and a driven unit (14) connected to an intake or exhaust camshaft, there being arranged within the device (1), a coupling element (18) by which a rotationally fixed, force-transmitting connection can be established between the drive unit (2) and the driven unit (14) when the pressure of the hydraulic medium falls below a level required for the displacement of the adjusting piston (9), the coupling element (18) being configured as a locking piston (19) which can be displaced on the one hand by hydraulic pressure and on the other hand by an auxiliary energy and comprises on an end face (26) a number of concentrically arranged extensions (27) which are associated to complementary recesses (35) of a locking ring (34) in the housing (6) to avoid noise generation on starting of the internal combustion eng

  • Patent number: 5927239
Abstract: Apparatus for adjusting the valve timing of gas exchange valves in an internal combustion engine, includes a driving unit in driving relationship with a crankshaft, a driven unit fixedly secured to an intake camshaft or exhaust camshaft, and an adjusting member operatively connected to the driving unit and the driven unit and capable of reciprocating between two axially spaced end positions by a hydraulic medium. In order to prevent noise emission after ignition of the engine, a coupling member is provided to interact with the driving unit and to move between an idle position in which the coupling member is disengaged from the driving unit and an operative position in which the coupling member interlocks with the driving unit and effects a fixed rotative engagement between the driving unit and the driven unit to lock the adjusting member in place when pressure applied by hydraulic medium drops below a level required for displacing the adjusting member.
