    Abstract: Example embodiments presented herein are directed towards the management of a Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU) related path failure. The example embodiments comprise an originating node, or a node sending a data message, identifying a path with a re-transmission count that is equal to or greater than a predetermined heartbeat threshold value. The originating node further extends a heartbeat message size according to a maximum message transfer size. The originating sends the extended heartbeat message of the identified path and manages the identified path based on results of the extended heartbeat message transmission.
