  • Patent number: 7928269
Abstract: A process for separating at least one tertiary alcohol from at least one secondary alcohol from pine oil, the process comprising: reacting the pine oil comprising the at least one secondary alcohol and the at least one tertiary alcohol with at least one C3-C30 carboxylic acid ester, and at least one base, wherein the secondary alcohol is esterified to produce at least one secondary ester, with the proviso that the base is not a hydroxide; and separating the tertiary alcohol from the secondary ester.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 30, 2008
Date of Patent: April 19, 2011
Assignee: LyondellBasell Flavors and Fragrances, LLC

  • Patent number: 7589241
Abstract: A process for separating at least one tertiary alcohol from at least one secondary alcohol from pine oil, the process comprising: reacting the pine oil comprising the at least one secondary alcohol and the at least one tertiary alcohol with at least one organic carbonate, and at least one base, wherein the secondary alcohol is esterified to produce at least one secondary ester; and separating the tertiary alcohol from the secondary ester.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 7446221
Abstract: A practical, economical process for making tricyclodecenyl esters is disclosed. After reacting a lower carboxylic acid and a dicyclopentadiene in the presence of triflic acid to form the ester, the reaction mixture is distilled in the presence of a base to isolate a fragrance-quality tricyclodecenyl ester. Adding enough base to neutralize the triflic acid enables a distillation-only purification, facilitates starting material recovery, and avoids drawbacks of a basic workup.

Date of Patent: November 4, 2008
    Assignee: Equistar Chemicals, LP
    Inventor: Mikhail Y. Lebedev
  • Publication number: 20080021235
Abstract: A process for making tricyclodecenyl esters is disclosed. A C2-C4 carboxylic acid and a dicyclopentadiene react in the presence of triflic acid under conditions effective to produce the ester. The process gives tricyclodecenyl esters in good yield while avoiding the need to use a large excess of the carboxylic acid. The process efficiently provides fragrance-quality tricyclodecenyl esters from technical grade dicyclopentadienes and/or recycled carboxylic acids.

  • Patent number: 7247743
Abstract: A process for making monomenthyl esters of dicarboxylic acids is disclosed. Menthol reacts with a saturated, cyclic anhydride in the presence of a base catalyst under conditions effective to produce a mixture of mono- and bis-menthyl esters in which the molar ratio of mono- to bis-menthyl esters is enhanced compared with the ratio of esters produced in a similar uncatalyzed process.
