  • Patent number: 6353601
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for setting up a connection and to a cellular radio system used during a hand-off. The cellular radio system comprises subscriber terminals and base stations that communicate with the subscriber terminals and that form antenna beams that are oriented towards the subscriber terminal in order to set up an optimum connection to the subscriber terminal. The cellular radio system comprises calculation means for calculating the location of the subscriber terminal in the cellular radio system on the basis of the established connection, the base stations that set up the connection to the subscriber terminal orienting their antenna beams rapidly towards the subscriber terminal on the basis of the aforementioned location data.

  • Patent number: 6041230
Abstract: The invention relates to a transmission method and a cellular radio system comprising a base station and a vocoder which communicate with each other via a transmission path and which transmit a signal to each other. The vocoder receives a signal and encodes the received signal which at least partly consists of spare bits. The cellular radio system comprises a filtering means for filtering spare bits off the signal prior to transmitting the signal to the transmission path. The filtering of the spare bits makes it possible to save the transmission path capacity for other uses.

  • Patent number: 6038458
Abstract: A method for selecting a signal used in a cellular radio system having base stations and a vocoder encoding a signal. The vocoder is operationally connected to the base stations via transmission paths of different lengths. The base stations receive a signal encoded by the vocoder in the forward direction and transmit a signal to the vocoder in the reverse direction. The cellular radio system includes selectors that are separate from the base stations and that are arranged to select at least one signal to be transmitted to the vocoder from the signals received by the base stations in the reverse direction. The selectors are arranged to distribute to the base stations the signal arriving from the vocoder in the forward direction.

  • Patent number: 6023607
Abstract: The invention relates to a radio system where oriented antenna beams are used over a radio connection between a network subsystem and a subscriber terminal with a fixed location. The network subsystem comprises means for storing parameters of a bidirectional radio connection, including e.g. the transmit beam angle, the receive beam angle, the air interface delay profile, the air interface impulse response, the transmit power of the network subsystem, the transmit power of the subscriber terminal, and the number of rake branches. The network subsystem also comprises a common measuring unit that measures parameters of a bidirectional test radio connection of a new user.

  • Patent number: 5978680
Abstract: The invention relates to a transmission method and a cellular radio system comprising base stations and at least one vocoder, the base stations and the vocoder transmitting a signal to each other, the base stations transmitting a signal to the vocoder substantially simultaneously, the vocoder receiving the substantially simultaneously transmitted signals at different moments of reception, in which cellular radio system after the vocoder has received the first signal, the vocoder is arranged to transmit signals to the base stations the signals of which arrive at the vocoder at least partly during a predetermined time window.

  • Patent number: 5974321
Abstract: The invention relates to a transmission method and a cellular radio system comprising base stations and at least one vocoder. The base stations and the vocoder transmit a signal to each other. The base stations transmit a signal to the vocoder substantially simultaneously, the vocoder receiving the simultaneously transmitted signals at different moments of reception. The cellular radio system comprises comparing means for comparing the moments of reception of the signals to a predetermined time window, measuring means for measuring and comparing the quality of the received signals, and selection means for selecting a signal on the basis of the aforementioned signal measurement and comparison.

  • Patent number: 5878062
Abstract: A cellular radio system at least one transceiver which receives a signal packed into frames, a coder for channel coding the signal received by the transceiver prior to transmitting the signal as bits, and a vocoder for source coding the signal. The coder forms and adds check bits to the signal to be transmitted, the check bits being used in detecting errors causes by transmitting the signal. The coder adds the check bits in the channel coding to reduce the number of bits in the frames received by the transceiver.
