  • Publication number: 20180272666
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a liner for containers or packages. The liner includes several polymer layers, exhibits a barrier function (e.g., gas or moisture barrier function), and is peelably attachable to one or more container/package surfaces. When the liner lines a package or container the package or container exhibits the liner's barrier function, and the liner can be peeled from the package or container to facilitate recycling or disposal. The liner is thermoformable, and can thus be either shaped to conform to the shape of a pre-formed container or shaped simultaneously with formation of the container from a precursor material to which the liner is peelably bound, either prior to or during container formation.

  • Publication number: 20180273232
Abstract: The disclosure relates to containers for storing articles in a storage space within the container. The storage space is segregated from a reservoir within the interior of the container by a removable insert that prevents movement of the stored articles between the storage space and the reservoir, but does not prevent movement of, for example, gases or liquids therebetween. The insert is interposed between one or more overhangs which extend inwardly within the interior of the container and one or more shelf portions. The shelf portions maintain the patency of the reservoir, and the overhangs prevent the insert from simply falling out of the container. However, the insert can be displaced from the container by a user desiring to do so by grasping the container at its exterior and applying sufficient manual force to displace a flexible portion of the container body.

  • Publication number: 20180264686
Abstract: The disclosure relates to an apparatus for securely (and preferably reversibly) holding a container having a concave interior portion while a liner that abuts the concave interior portion 5 is removed from the container by peeling it therefrom. The apparatus includes a container holder having one or more holding surfaces, such as the interior of an orifice that extends through it. A holding surface (e.g., an O-ring or ridge) secures the container temporarily and reversibly, and prevents the container from disengaging from the container holder during peeling of the liner. An optional deflector can deflect a tab portion of the liner to facilitate its 10 removal from the container. After the liner is removed, the remaining portion of the container can be removed from the apparatus (e.g., and recycled).

  • Patent number: 10076865
Abstract: The disclosure relates to forming shaped thermoplastic articles having smooth peripheries. Many thermoplastic articles have sharp edges formed upon molding or cutting the article from a feedstock sheet. Such sharp edges can damage thin plastic films or flesh which they contact, and smoothing the edges is desirable. Described herein are methods of forming a smooth periphery for such sharp-edged articles by rolling over the sharp edge. The smoothing operation is performed by forming a deflectable flange including a bend region separated from the potentially sharp peripheral edge by a spacer, deflecting a portion of the deflectable flange, and softening at least one bent portion of the deflectable flange to yield a smooth periphery upon cooling.

  • Patent number: 9987835
Abstract: A multilayer stack of polymeric sheets can be used in thermoforming processes to make objects wherein each sheet has substantially the same shape. The stack includes at least one sheet of a thermoformable polymer, and can include many such sheets. A barrier layer is interposed between at least an overlapping portion at least two of the polymeric sheets in order to prevent fusion of the sheets in the overlapping portion during the thermoforming process. The barrier layer can include an adhesive that adheres the sheets in the overlapping portion. In formed articles including such an adhesive, the sheets can be manually peeled from one another if a suitable adhesive is selected. The stack (and object formed using the stack) can include polymeric sheets that are not thermoformable, but are adhered to the surface of a thermoformable sheet.

  • Publication number: 20180134026
Abstract: The disclosure relates to containers and other shaped articles that have a relatively thick substrate layer and one or more relatively thin liner sheets peelably adhered thereto. Animal litter can be placed atop the liner sheets, preferably in a concave portion to contain the litter. The liner sheets have perforations extending therethrough that permit the passage of non-soiled litter, but do not permit the passage of at least one of animal feces and soiled animal litter, such as clumps of litter and urine. After an animal has deposited waste on or in the litter, the liner sheet can be peeled from the container and waste unable to pass through the perforations can be collected.

  • Publication number: 20170001786
Abstract: The disclosure relates to containers and other shaped articles (e.g., trays and dishes) for containing articles such as food products (e.g., cuts of meat and poultry or liquid-sensitive electronic parts) in shaped articles in which a wicking material is interposed between two thermoformed trays, at least one of which is perforated. Liquid can flow through the perforated tray into the wicking material and thence elsewhere (e.g., to a cavity) in the space between the two trays. The disclosure also relates to hollow shaped articles (e.g., bottles and jars) for containing fluids. In manufacture of such hollow shaped articles, the wicking material serves as a manufacturing aid and can be removed after formation of the article.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to containers and other shaped articles (e.g., trays and dishes) for containing articles such as food products (e.g., cuts of meat and poultry or liquid-sensitive electronic parts) in shaped articles such as. In one aspect, the container has a reservoir portion into which liquid can be sequestered. In another aspect, the container includes a thermoformable substrate, a liner, and a lidding material, the lidding and the liner defining a compartment for containing articles. The compartment can be detached from the substrate by detaching the liner from the substrate without necessarily rupturing the compartment. A substantial portion of the containers described herein can be recycled by separating the liner and/or lidding from the substrate. The disclosure also relates to methods of making thermoformed articles having multiple layers that does not rely on use of a coextruded or other composite thermoplastic-containing substrate.

  • Publication number: 20130142975
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a laminated, thermoformable barrier film useful as a peelable surface liner, such as in containers and other shaped articles. The laminated film includes at least two layers, including a distal layer and a medial layer. The medial layer includes an odor-resistant polymer barrier layer that inhibits passage of gases and odors therethrough. The distal layer includes a polymer layer that inhibits permeation of a liquid through to distal layer from a contact face thereof to the barrier layer. Optionally, the distal layer can include a scratch resistant layer. The laminated film can also include a proximal layer that includes a layer of a pliable polymer. The laminated film can be included as a surface liner, or stack of surface liners, on a thermoformed article or on a sheet that can be thermoformed. The laminated sheets have multiple uses, including as liners for food service containers.
