  • Patent number: 4925488
Abstract: A process for removing copper from ferrous or other metal scrap in which the scrap is contacted with a polyvalent metal sulfide slag in the presence of an excess of copper-sulfide forming additive to convert the copper to copper sulfide which is extracted into the slag to provide a ratio of copper in the slag to copper in the metal scrap of at least about 10.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 30, 1987
Date of Patent: May 15, 1990
Inventors: Milton Blander, Shome N. Sinha
  • Patent number: 4744875
Abstract: Apparatus for processing a metallic fluid containing iron oxide, container for a molten metal including an electrically conductive refractory disposed for contact with the molten metal which contains iron oxide, an electrolyte in the form of a basic slag on top of the molten metal, an electrode in the container in contact with the slag electrically separated from the refractory, and means for establishing a voltage across the refractory and the electrode to reduce iron oxide to iron at the surface of the refractory in contact with the iron oxide containing fluid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 23, 1987
Date of Patent: May 17, 1988
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of Energy
Inventors: Milton Blander, Glenn M. Cook

  • Patent number: 4475993
Abstract: A process for recovering silver, gallium and/or other trace metals from a fine grained industrial fly ash associated with a process for producing phosphorous, the fly ash having a silicate base and containing surface deposits of the trace metals as oxides, chlorides or the like, with the process being carried out by contacting the fly ash with AlCl.sub.3 in an alkali halide melt to react the trace metals with the AlCl.sub.3 to form compositions soluble in the melt and a residue containing the silicate and aluminum oxide or other aluminum precipitate, and separating the desired trace metal or metals from the melt by electrolysis or other separation techniques.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 15, 1983
Date of Patent: October 9, 1984
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of Energy
Inventors: Milton Blander, Chien M. Wai, Zoltan Nagy
