  • Patent number: 5845580
Abstract: An apparatus for dynamically filling a gap between a side of a railway train car and an adjacent edge of a station or loading platform for preventing accident or injury to passengers while boarding or alighting from the train. A plurality of flexible, flat planar sheet-like members project outwardly from a vertical platform edge surface that is confrontingly opposed to the side of a railway train car located adjacent to the platform. The extension of the projecting members from the platform is such that as an approaching train traveling along a track moves into proximity with the platform, the train contacts at least the free ends of the projecting members whereby the members are thereby resiliently deflected to assume a generally bent contour in the direction of train movement and thereby substantially fill the gap between the platform edge and the side of the train.

  • Patent number: 5224741
Abstract: This invention is directed to an internal expansion coupling system offering improved thrust restraint when joined to a pair of tubular members, preferably plastic, aligned in end-to-end relationship. The system comprises an elongated open ended tubular joint member formed from at least one, relatively rigid, rectangular sheet-like member, where each sheet-like member is defined by a pair of opposing sheet ends and a pair of opposing sheet sides, and a pair of sheet ends overlap such that the end portions thereof lie in close proximity to each other. The joint member is provided with a continuous circumferential gasket sealing sleeve formed of an elastomeric material and overlapping each said sheet side about the open end of the tubular joint member, where said gasket sealing sleeve is adapted to lie adjacent to and be compressed against the inside wall of said tubular member. Further, a member accessible externally thereof, as known in the art, is provided for expanding the tubular joint member.

  • Patent number: 4979503
Abstract: The hand-held oral irrigating device of the invention is substantially self-contained and powered solely by an input stream of continuous flow treatment liquid, such as water from a conventional supply line. The device includes a internal turbine that is rotated by one portion of the input stream and which generates a pulsatile flow of the treatment liquid from a second portion of the stream by interruptedly passing the second portion through apertures defined in the rotating turbine. The rotating turbine concurrently operates a gear pump for mixing a stored medicament, at a rate controlled by the rotation of the turbine, with the pulsatile flow of treatment liquid at a predetermined and substantially constant volumetric ratio. The resulting combined pulsatile flow of treatment liquid and medicament is discharged through a releasably mounted appliance head or tip for use, by way of example, in cleaning the teeth and stimulating the gums of the user.

  • Patent number: 4629436
Abstract: A personal flotation assistance device includes a housing having an open end, a cover pivotally movable from a first position closing the open end and a second position opening that end, a container of pressurized fluid having a frangible membrane, a pin for puncturing the membrane, an expandable envelope disposed in an initially collapsed condition, and a gear assembly connecting the cover and pin. User manipulation of the cover to move the same from its first to its second position causes pin movement both rotationally about its axis and translationally along that axis into membrane puncturing abutment, thereby releasing the pressurized fluid for inflating the envelope to provide the user with flotation assistance. Cover movement to its second from its first position additionally serves to clear the housing open end thus enabling expansion of the inflating envelope outwardly from the housing interior.

The port cap comprises a hollow body member having a wall at its first end, a second end which is open, and a hollow interior. The closed end of the body member carries a hollow projection having a first end which is closed and a second end which is open, the hollow interior of this projection being in fluid communication with the hollow interior of the body member. The cap has a weakened peripheral portion near its closed end so that its closed end may be twisted off to gain access to the hollow interior of the cap. The cap may comprise thread means on the inside surface of the body member near its open end or it may have thread means on the outside surface of the aforementioned projection between the weakened peripheral portion and the end wall of the body member. The cap may be used to cover or close the port of a device.

  • Patent number: 4259951
Abstract: A dual valve for an inhalation device which permits air to be withdrawn from the device upon inhalation but which prevents the flow of air into the device upon exhalation. The valve includes a central opening in communication with the device, and a plurality of openings about the central opening in communication with the surrounding environment. The valve also includes a central flexible flapper valve which extends across and controls the flow of air through the central opening, and a plurality of outer flexible flapper valves which extend across and control the flow of air through the outer openings. In use, inhalation by a user opens the central flexible flapper valve to allow the free flow of air from the inhalation device while the outer flapper valves remain closed. Correspondingly, exhalation by the user opens the outer flexible flapper valves from their seats to exhaust air to the surrounding atmosphere while the central flexible valve remains closed.

  • Patent number: 4222268
Abstract: A thermometer comprising: a molded plastic body member having a recess in one side forming a reservoir for a temperature indicating fluid and a relatively wide capillary passageway in fluid communication with the reservoir. Adjacent the capillary passageway is temperature indicating indicia. There is a relatively thin metal lid which seals the reservoir and conducts heat rapidly to the temperature indicating fluid when the thermometer is in use. The invention includes means for retaining the temperature indicating fluid in position so that the temperature can be read and recorded after the thermometer has been removed from a patient. There are several embodiments of the temperature indicating retaining means and these embodiments utilize air at atmospheric pressure to prevent the regression of the temperature indicating fluid into the reservoir after the thermometer has been removed from a patient.
