  • Patent number: 8829425
Abstract: A portable or handheld mass spectrometer making use of a cryogenic pumping, ion pumping or getter pumping system. The portable mass spectrometer contains a cryopump, ion pump, or getter pump, and operates in conjunction with a fixed docking station. The docking station contains a backing pump to bring the mass spectrometer manifold down to operating pressure prior to being placed into portable operation using the cryopump, ion pump, or getter pump. The individual pumps may be operated either separately or simultaneously. This configuration permits the portable mass spectrometer module to be small, lightweight and rugged, and yet be easily and quickly recharged and regenerated for use in either a field or laboratory environment.

  • Patent number: 8514394
Abstract: A spectrograph having multiple excitation wavelength ranges is disclosed. The spectrograph can include a wavelength switching mechanism to switch between different wavelength ranges in accordance with the wavelength of an incoming light signal. The wavelength switching mechanism can include multiple optical assemblies (or elements) corresponding to the different wavelength ranges for processing the incoming light signal. The mechanism can also include a switching component for switching the optical assemblies to align the appropriate assembly with the incoming light signal. Each optical assembly can include one or more transmission gratings to disperse the incoming light signal into multiple wavelengths within a particular wavelength range and a reflecting mirror proximate to the grating(s) to reflect the wavelengths of light back through the grating(s) to photodetectors for measuring to wavelengths to generate a light spectrum. The spectrograph can be used in Raman spectroscopy.

  • Patent number: 5930525
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and apparatuses for use with a host computer system that optimize the timing and sizing of data blocks that are part of an ATM PDU that is to be transmitted over an ATM network. The data blocks are transferred from the host's memory to a local memory in a network interface circuit. The network interface circuit includes a memory access circuit, a segmenting circuit, a local memory, and a scheduling circuit. The memory access circuit accesses the host's memory and fetches an initial size block of a data packet therefrom and supplies the block of the data to the segmenting circuit which segments the block of the data into a plurality of linked cells. The plurality of linked cells are then stored in the local memory. The scheduling circuit retrieves the linked cells in a predetermined order and transmits each of them over a network connection at a specific time.
