  • Patent number: 8610822
Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a housing. A camera module may be mounted within the housing. The housing may have a camera window with which a lens in the camera module is aligned. To rotationally and laterally align the camera module with respect to the camera window and the electronic device housing, an alignment structure may be mounted to the housing in alignment with the camera window and housing. The alignment structure may be formed form a ring-shaped structure with an opening. The alignment structures may have sidewalls that form an alignment groove for the camera module. The camera window may be formed from a circular opening in a layer of opaque material deposited on a transparent housing member such as a planar layer of glass. During the process, a laser tool may be used to trim the opening in the opaque material.

  • Publication number: 20130328462
Abstract: Improved housings for electronic devices are disclosed. An electronic device housing can make use of at least one outer member (e.g., cover) that can be aligned, protected and/or secured with respect to other portions of the housing for the electronic device. In one embodiment, an electronic device housing can have one or more outer members (e.g., exposed major surfaces), such as front or back surfaces, that are formed of glass. Protective sides can be provided in some embodiments to protect the edges of the one or more glass surfaces so as to dissipate impact forces and thus reduce damage to the electronic device housing. The one or more glass surfaces can be part of outer member assemblies that can be secured to other portions of the electronic device housing. According to one aspect, adjoining surfaces of electronic device housings can be mounted or arranged such that adjoining surfaces are flush to a high degree of precision. The electronic device can be portable and in some cases handheld.

  • Publication number: 20130314875
Abstract: Electronic devices having a multi-layer structure that provides enhanced conductivity (thermal and/or electrical conductivity) are disclosed. The multi-layer structure can have a plurality of adjacent layers. At least one layer can primarily provide structural rigidity, and at least another layer can primarily provide enhanced conductivity. The layer of high conductivity can serve to provide the electronic device with greater ability to disperse generated heat and/or to provide an accessible voltage potential (e.g., ground plane). Advantageously, the multi-layer structure can provide enhanced conductivity using an otherwise required structural component and without necessitating an increase in thickness.

  • Patent number: 8581193
Abstract: An electronic device having one or more sensors is provided. The sensors may include any suitable type of sensor that emits or receives radiation (e.g., light waves) from the environment. The electronic device may include openings through which radiation may reach the sensors while keeping the sensors hidden from view. In some embodiments, the sensors may be placed underneath an opening used for an audio receiver such that radiation is piped to the sensors using a light path or a chamfered surface along the opening. In some embodiments, the sensors may be embedded in a screen such that the radiation emitted by the sensors exits the screen instead of being reflected on the screen. In some embodiments, the sensors may be placed along the periphery of the display, such that access to the sensors is provided via discontinuities in a gasket used to couple the display to the electronic device.

  • Publication number: 20130295906
Abstract: A mobile communications device contains at least two microphones. One microphone is located away from the handset receiver and serves to pick up voice of a near end user of the device for transmission to the other party during a call. Another microphone is located near the handset receiver and serves to pick up acoustic output of the handset receiver (a far end signal). A signal processor measures the frequency response of the receiver. The signal processor performs spectral analysis of the receiver frequency response to determine whether or not the device is being held at the ear of the user. On that basis, the device automatically changes its operating mode, e.g., turns on or off a touch sensitive display screen during the call. Other embodiments are also described.

  • Publication number: 20130260823
Abstract: Improved approaches to providing a sealed acoustic chamber (e.g., a back volume) for an acoustic component (e.g., speaker) resident in a compact portable electronic device are disclosed. In one embodiment, a compact portable electronic device includes an internal module (or housing), such as an optical camera module that includes optical components, which contains a module volume. The module volume can be provided with a port (e.g., opening) but is otherwise a substantially enclosed (e.g., at least substantially sealed) volume. By acoustically coupling the acoustic component to the port, the module volume can be used as some or all of the back volume for the acoustic component. Advantageously, a compact portable electronic can provide quality acoustic audio output while requiring only a limited amount of dedicated space.

  • Publication number: 20130251182
Abstract: A portable electronic device that provides compact configurations for audio elements are disclosed. The audio elements can be drivers (e.g., speakers) or receivers (e.g., microphones). In one embodiment, an audio element can be mounted on or coupled to an intermediate structure (e.g., a flexible electrical substrate) having an opening therein to allow audio sound to pass there through. In another embodiment, an audio chamber can be formed to assist in directing audio sound between an opening an outer housing and a flexible electronic substrate to which the audio element is mounted or coupled thereto. In still another embodiment, a barrier, such as a mesh barrier, can be provided in an opening of an outer housing so that undesired foreign substances can be blocked from further entry into the opening in the outer housing.
