  • Patent number: 8346256
Abstract: A method of provisioning multicast services is provided. In an example, the method includes forming a plurality of multicast groups, each of the plurality of multicast groups associated with one of a plurality of first channel quality ranges. A request for a multicast service and an indicator (e.g., a channel quality indicator (CQI)) indicating a channel quality of a mobile unit are received from the mobile unit. The mobile unit is assigned to one of the plurality of multicast groups based on the indicated channel quality and the plurality of first channel quality ranges.

  • Patent number: 8005059
Abstract: Embodiments provided include a method for transmitting a packet to a receiver over primary and supplemental channels in a wireless communication network. Indications of a primary code and a set of N supplemental codes assigned to the receiver are communicated over a control channel. When it is determined that a packet should be transmitted over a supplemental channel, a first portion of the packet and a supplemental channel indicator are transmitted over a same single packet transmission time interval on the primary channel and a second portion of the packet is transmitted over the same single packet transmission time interval on the supplemental channel corresponding to the supplemental channel indicator. The supplemental channel uses an assigned specific supplemental code belonging to the set of N supplemental codes assigned to the receiver. When the packet should not be transmitted over a supplemental channel, the packet is transmitted over the primary channel.

  • Patent number: 7965665
Abstract: In a UMTS wireless communication system a UE autonomously determines that it is going to transit from an active traffic mode into an idle traffic mode and informs the NodeBs in its active set that it is doing so. It does so either by using Layer 1 signaling, using the uplink DPCCH to send a message to the NodeBs indicating the transition, or by using Layer 2 signaling by via MAC PDUs that contain the message, which are delivered on the uplink E-DPDCH to the NodeBs.

  • Patent number: 7920517
Abstract: A technique is disclosed for determining values of different portions of a total uplink interference, which can be used for scheduling and load control at a base station, for example. A disclosed example includes obtaining measurements from individual users and using those measurements to determine corresponding portions of a total uplink interference at the base station. One portion is associated with users that are controlled by a scheduler for that base station. Another portion is associated with users that are not controlled by that scheduler. Determining each of the portions individually and using a received total wideband power measurement allows for determining each of the major portions of the total uplink interference at a base station.

  • Patent number: 7689222
Abstract: In one embodiment of managing the use of channelization codes during soft handoff of a mobile station from a transferring network station to a candidate network station, a determination is made as to whether a field associated with an existing channelization code used by the candidate network station is unused and meets timing criteria associated with a corresponding field received by the mobile station from the transferring network station. Based on this determination, a channelization code for use by the candidate network station in communicating with the mobile station is assigned.

  • Patent number: 7643539
Abstract: A technique for arranging a receiver device (20) includes equally spacing adjacent rake receivers (26-30) within an observation window (OW). A disclosed technique for updating an observation window includes changing the position of one of the rake fingers (24, 30) while maintaining a position of other ones of the rake fingers. The disclosed technique for arranging rake fingers in a receiver device (20) does not depend on searching and tracking channel conditions and reduces computational complexity without sacrificing receiver performance.

  • Patent number: 7526304
Abstract: In a UMTS wireless communication system, the enhanced dedicated physical control channel (E-DPCCH) that is usually always transmitted together with the enhanced dedicated physical data channel (E-DPDCH) on the uplink from a UE to a NodeB is instead only transmitted when a predetermined “start criterion” is met and is turned off when a predetermined “stop criterion” is met until a “start criterion” is later met again. The UE starts transmitting E-DPCCH whenever the corresponding E-DPDCH transport format combination is different from the previous one in the same HARQ process or some other “start criterion” is met. Multiple mechanisms can be used to decide when the UE should switch off E-DPCCH transmission after the transport format combination of E-DPDCH has changed.

  • Patent number: 7496066
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for managing mobility of a wireless communication device across a first and a second access node in a common administrational area of a network. The method comprises using the first access node to assign a temporary identification to the wireless communication device, causing the second access node to identify the first access node from which the temporary identification originates and hiding the mobility of the wireless communication device from the network when routing traffic to a serving access node of the first and second access nodes based on the identified first access node and the temporary identification. In one embodiment, use of software at these access nodes may enable deploying of a centralized logical functionality instead of centralized physical nodes.

  • Patent number: 7443819
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for managing relocation of one or more scrambling codes in a spread spectrum wireless communications system. The method comprises detecting an indication for a serving radio network subsystem relocation that causes a user equipment to leave a first radio network controller and selectively transiting, through an intermediate transition, at least one scrambling code of the one or more scrambling codes associated with an uplink from the first radio network controller to a second radio network controller for the user equipment in response to the indication. The first radio network controller may maintain three pools of scrambling codes, namely, a first pool of one or more relocated scrambling codes (SCs), a second pool of one or more free scrambling codes and a third pool for each of one or more used scrambling codes. By avoiding an early reuse, an uplink scrambling code may be assigned to a particular UE because a target radio network controller, i.e.

  • Patent number: 7430420
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for controlling a communications system that includes a mobile wireless device, a first and a second base station and a radio network controller. The communications system may allocate frequency bands to users on a multiplicity of channels associated with a multi-layer access network across at least two cells communicatively coupled to a first and a second base station, respectively. The method comprises monitoring a radio emission parameter associated with the first and second base stations that communicate with the mobile wireless device. A radio emission parameter associated with the first and second base stations, such as signal strength or quality, is monitored, to select a target cell among a set of candidate cells for the mobile wireless device and to transfer the mobile wireless device from a first frequency band to a second frequency band.
