  • Patent number: 4979849
Abstract: A forming tool for generating a predetermined configuration in a rotating metal workpiece includes a tool body having a shelf formed thereon, a shim on the shelf, a cutting insert having a cutting edge on the shim and a clamp assembly for clamping the insert and the shim on the tool body. The clamp assembly includes a clamp member having top and bottom sides, and a pair of screws for securing the clamp member on the tool body. The clamp member has a pair of substantially parallel elongated front and rear clamping pads formed on the bottom side thereof and it is mounted so that one of the clamping pads is supported on the tool body whereas the other clamping pad engages the insert to secure it on the tool body. The clamp member has an arcuate crown formed on the top side thereof which is oriented so that the apex thereof is substantially parallel to the clamping pads.

  • Patent number: 4490080
Abstract: A hole cutting tool of the type operable to produce a circular hole by cutting only the circumferential areas thereof, comprising removable cutting inserts which are received in a cutting head of the tool and are engageable with a workpiece to produce a desired hole. A cooperative wedge-like relation between the inserts and wedge elements of the tool secures the inserts in slots in the cutting head and permits use of the tool in reduced sizes.

  • Patent number: 4200416
Abstract: A tool having an interchangeable insert includes a body with a recess for receiving the insert. The body is further provided with alignment means whereby the insert and body may be operatively positioned with respect to a work piece. A wedge positioned between the insert and the body forces the insert into operational contact with the alignment means. A step abuts a portion of the edge so as to force the wedge against the insert in substantial line contact therewith so as to prevent opposite surfaces of the body and insert from fully contacting the wedge in a manner which could result in frictional blocking, i.e. taper lock, and accordingly subsequent improper hang up of the wedge.

  • Patent number: 4174916
Abstract: A forming tool generally having a dove-tail shaped machine connector provided with an integral outwardly extending front support which in cooperation with the front surface of the tool is adapted to receive a forming insert. The front support is provided with a slot for receipt of locking wedges as to lock the insert in position with respect to the tool. The front support is positioned below the working edge of the insert and the tool is further provided with means for positioning the insert laterally with respect to the slot.
