  • Publication number: 20240016077
Abstract: A seed orientation system for an agricultural planter includes a seed orientation coil assembly defining a helical pathway. As seed from a seed source enters the seed orientation coil assembly, air flow from an air source is directed toward the seed causing the seed to orient as the seed moves along the helical pathway toward a seed exit. Upon exiting the seed orientation coil assembly, the seed is deposited into the seed furrow with the seed tip-down and with germ of the seed facing an adjacent row. The seed orientation system may be retrofitted onto existing planter row units.

  • Publication number: 20220192079
Abstract: A seed orientation apparatus and system has a seed transfer tube that receives randomly oriented seeds from an agricultural row planter seed meter and moves seeds from a seed collector to a curved pathway in a seed orientation coil assembly. The seed orientation coil assembly uses some combination of aerodynamics, centrifugal force, and path geometry to align the seed. The aligned seed is stabilized and entrained in an air stream and is subsequently discharged into a wedge-shaped furrow, detrained from the air stream, and wedged in the furrow before being covered by a closing wheel, thereby planting the aligned seed into the soil while achieving tip-down seed orientation with the germ facing an adjacent row. The seed orientation apparatus and system may be retrofitted onto existing planter row units. A method of planting is also described.

  • Publication number: 20200367425
Abstract: The present invention comprises of a seed orientation system generally consisting of a seed transfer tube that moves seeds from a seed collector to a helical pathway in a seed orientation coil assembly. The seed orientation coil assembly can receive randomly orientated seeds from the planter seed meter, orientating the seed tip-down, germ facing adjacent row, then planting the seed into the soil with said orientation. The device may be retrofitted onto existing planter row units replacing the existing seed tube.
