Patent number: 11955140Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a system, method, and computer program product for offsetting a reading head on a magnetic tape to improve verification. A processor determines a write head width, a read head width, and a track pitch based on determining an LTO standard of the magnetic tape. The processor determines a distance of the reading head from a writing head using the write head width, the read head width, and the track pitch, and causes a tape appliance to relocate the read head on the magnetic tape to the determined distance.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2022Date of Patent: April 9, 2024Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Tatsuki Sawada, Tsuyoshi Miyamura, Setsuko Masuda, Mitsuhiro Nishida

Patent number: 11789795Abstract: In an approach to using a cut and paste segment for reading an sHKDS, a request to reposition a tape media in a tape drive is received. Responsive to encountering an error reading an sHKDS while attempting to reposition the tape media, one segment of a plurality of segments from a data set cut and paste error recovery procedure (ERP) is used for an sHKDS cut and paste ERP. Responsive to recovering the sHKDS using the sHKDS cut and paste ERP, the one segment reserved for the sHKDS cut and paste ERP is released to the data set cut and paste ERP.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2021Date of Patent: October 17, 2023Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Tsuyoshi Miyamura, Setsuko Masuda, Mitsuhiro Nishida, Tatsuki Sawada

Patent number: 11437070Abstract: Repositioning to a beginning of an area of a tape medium to which a reposition request is directed can be completed. Reading, as a part of an error recovery procedure (ERP), between a first dataset of the area and an mth dataset of the area, can be completed, where m is a number of datasets for which cut and paste multi segments are to be generated. Cut and paste segments for each of the datasets in a range from the first dataset and the mth dataset can be generated. A subset of datasets within the range of the first dataset to the mth dataset having readable dataset information table (DSIT) information can be determined. A determination can be made whether the target data position is included within the subset of datasets within the range of the first dataset to the mth dataset by reading the DSIT information.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2021Date of Patent: September 6, 2022Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Tsuyoshi Miyamura, Setsuko Masuda, Mitsuhiro Nishida, Tatsuki Sawada

Patent number: 9619147Abstract: The present invention provides a search method used to search for the reading order of a plurality of recording groups when the plurality of recording groups written on tape are continuously read by a tape drive which manages data on tape in recording units having a fixed data length for each recording. This search method includes the steps of: receiving information on a plurality of tape groups to be read; and sorting the plurality of recording groups to be read so the reading time is shortened. In the sorting step, the time required to sort the plurality of reading groups is reduced by combining two or more recording groups into a single object to be sorted in the sorting step when at least two or more contiguous recording groups have been assigned to the same region or are assigned across adjacent regions among the plurality of regions.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2016Date of Patent: April 11, 2017Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Takashi Katagiri, Mitsuhiro Nishida

Patent number: 9251826Abstract: Described herein are embodiments for utilizing stored write environment conditions for read error recovery. A tape drive measures read environment conditions as a result of receiving a read command to read data from a portion of tape and compares the read environment conditions to the write environment conditions stored for that portion of tape. If the read environment conditions are not within the predetermined range of the write environment conditions, then the handling of the tape is altered to improve read element placement on the tape by accounting for expansion and contraction of the tape based on the stored write environment conditions. The handling of the tape is altered by at least one of increasing or decreasing the tension of the tape, offsetting the tape head up or down laterally with respect to the tape, and slowing down the movement of tape across the tape head.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2014Date of Patent: February 2, 2016Assignee: GLOBALFOUNDRIES INC.Inventors: Josephine F. Patent number: 9190112Abstract: Described are embodiments of an invention for storing write environment conditions of a tape cartridge. A tape drive measures and stores the write environment conditions for a portion of tape as a result of receiving a write command to write data to the same portion of tape. In one embodiment, the write environment conditions are measured and stored to the tape cartridge each time a write command is received such that each portion of tape written has corresponding stored write environment conditions. The write environment conditions include temperature and relative humidity in one embodiment. The stored write environment conditions for each portion of tape written creates a historical log of the environment conditions that the tape was written within. The historical log can provide information to a manufacturer or user regarding the environmental conditions the user operates their tape drive within and provides information to assist with failure analysis.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2014Date of Patent: November 17, 2015Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Josephine F. Patent number: 8484412Abstract: A magnetic tape drive having a tape drive system for moving magnetic tape, tape read/write and servo system, tape cartridge load/unload systems, I/O communications, memory; and a control system, operates in three modes to conserve energy consumption. A first low power mode powers the I/O communications, the memory, and the control system. If a magnetic tape cartridge is in loaded position in the magnetic tape drive, the second low power mode powers the same as the first low power mode, and additionally powers the tape drive system to apply tension to a magnetic tape of the magnetic tape cartridge. In the first and the second low power modes, the control system operates the I/O communications, the memory and the control system to respond to and execute commands received at the I/O communications if the commands are executable without magnetic tape access. The third, full power mode, is entered if a command received at the I/O communications requires magnetic tape access.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2009Date of Patent: July 9, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Allen Keith Bates, Steven Ross Bentley, Randall Scot Doan, Katsuhiko Hagiwara, Fahnmusa Christian Jangaba, Christine Renee Knibloe, Hisato Matsuo, Hirokazu Nakayama, Mitsuhiro Nishida, Daniel James Winarski
