  • Publication number: 20090237593
Abstract: According to the present invention, by controlling the angular distribution of the light outputted from a light guide plate to enable the angular brightness distribution of the light emitted from a backlight device to be controlled, the thickness of a liquid crystal display apparatus having the backlight device is reduced as well as the brightness is improved due to the reduction in returned light amount. Furthermore, since light is sufficiently mixed in the light guide plate, light sources with comparative large unevenness are enabled to be used. A backlight device according to the present invention includes a hole or a projection formed on the light outgoing plane of a light guide plate or the back plane opposing the light-outgoing plane, and a side face of the hole or the projection is directed roughly perpendicularly to the light-outgoing plane. Furthermore, specular reflection plates are arranged on the bottom plane and the side faces of the light guide plate.

  • Patent number: 7489717
Abstract: A surface-emitting semiconductor laser (VCSEL) having a structure in which the single horizontal mode of high power is stably maintained, and an optical device including a light-source device having this surface-emitting semiconductor laser are provided. A scattering-loss-structure portion composed of a low refractive-index region is disposed around a main current path in a surface-emitting semiconductor laser, namely around a cavity structure portion; the low refractive-index region is disposed at intervals; and the shape of the tip portion opposing to the center portion is set to be a tapered shape, for example, at an acute angle. Accordingly, in the cavity structure portion, the loss of light-emitting laser of a high-order mode localized in the outer circumferential portion becomes large, so that a surface-emitting semiconductor laser that oscillates the single-mode laser with favorable performance is constructed.

  • Publication number: 20090009686
Abstract: To provide a surface emitting device and a liquid crystal display in which the number of divided main light-source images is increased to enhance the uniformity of luminance distribution. A surface emitting device 10 according to the invention includes: a diffusing sheet 14 constituting a light exiting surface; a reflector 13 disposed opposite to the diffusing sheet 14; light sources 12 disposed between the diffusing sheet 14 and the reflector 13; and a prism sheet (light-source-image division sheet) 16 disposed between the diffusing sheet 14 and the light sources 12. The prism sheet 16 has linear protrusions 16a on the front surface thereof; and a flat portion 16d parallel to the sheet surface between the adjacent linear protrusions 16a. This generates light-source images through the flat portions 16d in addition to the divided light-source images through the linear protrusions 16a to increase the number of light-source images, thereby improving luminance uniformity.
