  • Patent number: 7022059
Abstract: A chopper folder for a rotary press folds signatures which are periodically conveyed, one signature at a time, from a folding machine. The chopper folder includes a pair of folding rollers for folding a signature parallel to the conveyance direction, a prime mover, a crank arm fixed to an output shaft of the prime mover to be rotated together with the output shaft, a blade holder connected to the crank arm via a link, a chopper blade held in the blade holder and adapted to push the signature from an upper surface thereof in order to insert the signature into a space between the pair of folding rollers, and guide units for restricting motion of the blade holder such that the blade holder reciprocates only in a direction perpendicular to a conveyance plane along which the signature is conveyed.

  • Patent number: 6740024
Abstract: The folding station of a rotary printing press has a folding cylinder on which the printed paper web is cut into sections. Mounted opposite the folding cylinder, a jaw cylinder has cut in its surface several jaw cavities each extending parallel to the jaw cylinder axis for receiving the midpart of the web section as the same is inserted therein by a folding blade on the folding cylinder. Each jaw cavity has mounted therein a series of fixed jaw parts and a series of movable jaw parts, the latter being jointly movable toward and away from the former for engaging and folding the midpart of the web section. The two outmost ones of the movable jaw parts are positioned closer to the fixed jaw parts than are the other, medial movable jaw parts, in order to more firmly engage the margins of the web section without causing ink offset between the contacting surfaces of the image areas of the web section.

  • Publication number: 20040038796
Abstract: Problems exist such as the presence of a narrow gap when the vicinity of a spliced joint of paper webs is passed between an outer surface of a roller and an outer surface of a folding cylinder. Paper blockages due to increased thickness are therefore likely to arise, making it easy for the paper web to become torn. This in turn damages the paper, and machine stoppages are also increased.

  • Publication number: 20040014580
Abstract: A printed paper web is cut into sections by a cutting cylinder while traveling on a folding cylinder, and each paper section has its midpart subsequently pushed off the folding cylinder into a jaw cavity in a jaw cylinder thereby to be folded into a signature. The jaw cavity has mounted therein a series of spaced-apart movable jaw parts jointly movable into and out of paper section-folding engagement with a series of spaced-apart fixed jaw parts. The folding cylinder has a retractable folding blade mounted thereto for pushing each paper section into space between the series of fixed and movable jaw parts. Fabricated from sheet metal, the folding blade has a series of discrete folding blade parts each having a portion that is situated out of register with both of the fixed and the movable jaw parts or with the image area of the paper section and which is thicker than the rest of the folding blade part.

  • Patent number: 6550383
Abstract: A series of offset perfecting press units are stacked for printing multicolor images on both surfaces of a web traveling successively therethrough. Each printing unit has two plate cylinders each split into a pair of halves, and two blanket cylinders in rolling contact with the respective plate cylinders and, via the web, with each other. The plate cylinder halves are capable of independent displacement both axially and circumferentially of the plate cylinder for image registration both transversely and longitudinally of the web. The four plate cylinder halves are driven independently from as many drive motors via respective drive linkages. Two of the four drive motors are further coupled via two associated ones of the drive linkages to the blanket cylinders. Motor power is first transmitted to the blanket cylinders, which are less in diameter than the plate cylinders, then to the two plate cylinder halves.

  • Patent number: 6533154
Abstract: The gap adjusting device for nipping rollers is provided with one roller rotatably provided at a prescribed position and the other movable roller. The nipping rollers are adapted so that the other roller is capable of forcing a paper web passing between the two rollers onto the one roller. A nipping-roller gap adjusting device includes a pair of supporting arms, one end of each of the supporting arms being swingably supported and the other end thereof rotatably supporting the other roller. A pressing force imparting device gives to the support arms a force working in such a direction that causes the other roller to approach the one roller and which, at the same time, can adjust the magnitude of the force. A minimum gap setting device can set a minimum gap between the one roller and the other roller. A gap adjusting device adjusts the size of a gap between the one roller and the other roller. A fixed frame member rotatably supports the one roller. The gap adjusting device is mounted on the fixed frame.

  • Patent number: 6481348
Abstract: A groove for receiving opposite end edges of an object, like a printing plate that extends around a printing cylinder, is formed in a printing cylinder adjacent the outer circumferential surface thereof to extend from an axially extending anchor-shaft hole to the outer circumferential surface of the cylinder body. One wall surface of the groove intersects, at an acute angle, a tangent plane passing through a line of intersection between the wall surface and the outer circumferential surface of the printing cylinder, thereby forming an edge together with the circumferential surface of the printing cylinder. When an anchor shaft inserted into the anchor-shaft hole is rotated by means of elastic force, pins studded into a cutaway surface of the anchor-shaft enter anchor holes formed in an end edge portion of the object and secure the end edge portion within the groove. Thus, the object is attached to the printing cylinder.

  • Patent number: 6472064
Abstract: A tab for fixing a paper web end portion of a paper roll includes a substantially parallelogram-shaped base sheet having two diagonally opposite acute angles. A plurality of linear, discontinuous cuts are formed on the base sheet in parallel with two opposite sides of the base sheet to thereby define a first portion in cooperation with one of the two opposite sides and a second portion in cooperation with the other side. The cuts extend to at least one of other two opposite sides of the base sheet. Adhesive is applied to the first and second portions on the same surface such that an appropriate nonadhesive portion is formed between adhesive applied onto the first portion and adhesive applied onto the second portion. A release sheet having a size greater than that of the tab is attached to an adhesive-applied side of the tab such that a portion thereof is projected beyond the profile of the tab. Alternatively, the release sheet assumes the form of tape.

  • Patent number: 5255606
Abstract: A drag roller device for a printing apparatus comprises a cleaning means for cleaning a drag roller. The cleaning means is in contact with a part of the circumferential surface of the drag roller except for the circumferential area around which a printed continuous sheet fed from a printing section is wound. The cleaning means may be movable within the circumferential area of the drag roller or separable from it. The cleaning means may be supplied with a cleaning liquid. In the drag roller device thus constructed, the cleaning means can remove various stains and/or spots of ink transferred from the circumferential surface of the drag roller and/or additional rollers at each revolution of the drag roller. This cleaning operation of the cleaning means ensures to prevent the printed surface of the continuous sheet succeedingly fed from damaging with the stains and spots of ink from the drag roller and so on.
