  • Patent number: 8596161
Abstract: A spring for assisting a tilt adjustment operation can be easily and rapidly attached to a fixed bracket and a movable bracket. Each of two flanges of a fixed bracket has a tilted flange plate and a locking piece. The locking piece has a guiding edge, a locking recess, an insertion recess, and a fixing hole. In a spring member, a first locking shaft portion is formed on the rear side of two coil portions, and a second locking shaft portion is formed rearward from the distal end of the first locking shaft portion. The first locking shaft portion is engaged with the locking recess, and the second locking shaft portion is engaged with the fixing hole. The distance between the first locking shaft portions of the spring member is less that the distance between the two guiding edges.

  • Patent number: 6378903
Abstract: A shock absorbing apparatus for a steering column includes: a sliding capsule having a collar portion fixed immovably to a vehicle body; and a column bracket having a shock absorbing hole which is elongated in a longitudinal direction of a steering column and in which a fixing through-hole portion on one end side of the elongated hole, a first shock absorbing portion having a shaft-like member in a vicinity of the fixing through-hole portion, and a second shock absorbing portion having a crushable inner peripheral edge at a side edge of the elongated hole are substantially continuously formed in the longitudinal direction. During a collision, the collar portion bends the shaft-like member and crushes the second shock absorbing portion to thereby absorb colliding energy.

  • Patent number: 5824348
Abstract: A mold for manufacturing a steering shaft formed with inner and outer shafts which are telescopically contractible on impact is disclosed. The mold includes an outer shaft supporting mold portion and an inner shaft supporting mold portion that respectively receive the outer and inner shafts in a telescoped position. A first molten resin injection guide portion formed in the outer shaft supporting mold is located in alignment with a hole formed in the outer shaft and a circumferential groove formed in the inner shaft to enable injection of resin through the hole into the groove. A second molten resin injection guide portion communicates with a first opening formed between the outer and inner shafts to enable injection of resin material into this opening to fix the shafts in concentric alignment with each other.

  • Patent number: 5640884
Abstract: A coupling and sliding section A.sub.3 is formed by an outer shaft A.sub.1 and an inner shaft A.sub.2 of a steering shaft A which is telescopically contractable in the axial direction during receipt of an impact. A resin material 5 is injected between a slid portion 4 of the inner shaft A.sub.2 and a sliding portion 2 of the outer shaft A.sub.1 through an opening 1a of the outer shaft A.sub.1, thereby forming a sliding resin portion 6. In addition, a fixing resin portion 6 is formed in the coupling and sliding section A.sub.3 at an appropriate interval from the sliding resin portion 6.

  • Patent number: 5615916
Abstract: A shock absorbing apparatus for a steering column includes an energy absorbing member which is immovably fixed to a vehicle body and a bracket adapted to move together with the steering column with respect to the energy absorbing member. The bracket is provided with a horizontally crushing through-hole portion, while the energy absorbing member is provided with a pair of crushable abutment portions formed respectively on opposite sides of a flat plate-like main portion. The energy absorbing member is disposed by being passed through the horizontally crushing through-hole portion, and both sides of the horizontally crushing through-hole portion normally abut against the crushable abutment portions.

  • Patent number: 5452917
Abstract: An apparatus for supporting a tiltable steering shaft includes: a fixed bracket A having a pair of fixing/supporting members A.sub.1 which are connected to each other by means of a U-shaped connecting member 5 so as to be arranged laterally symmetrically at an appropriate distance therebetween; a movable bracket B having a pair of side plates 6 which are arranged in face-to-face relation to each other at an appropriate distance therebetween, the side plates 6 of the movable bracket B being secured to a steering column 2, the movable bracket B being disposed between the fixing/supporting members A1 of the fixed bracket A in such a manner as to be capable of being raised or lowered and of being secured at an appropriate position by means of a tilt-adjusting bar 9. A pair of abutting ends 6a of the side plates 6 of the movable bracket B are capable of abutting against a pair of abutted ends 5a of the connecting member 5 only when an impact load has occurred.
