  • Patent number: 5424051
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for treating a feed gas stream containing CO.sub.2 and mercaptans by contacting the feed gas stream with a CO.sub.2 -selective adsorbent under conditions effective to produce a CO.sub.2 -depleted feed gas stream which is thereafter subjected to contact with an alkaline scrubbing solution under mercaptan absorption conditions effective to produce a mercaptan- and a CO.sub.2 -depleted product gas stream and a mercaptide-containing scrubbing solution. At least a portion of the product gas stream may be utilized to regenerate the CO.sub.2 -selective adsorbent and the mercaptide-containing scrubbing solution may be regenerated by contacting same with oxygen in the presence of an oxidation catalyst.

  • Patent number: 5114689
Abstract: The present invention relates to a new and integrated process involving the utilization of a primary adsorption bed containing a regenerable, physical adsorbent and an auxiliary sorption bed containing a chemisorbent for the removal of sulfur compounds from a fluid stream, which process provides for higher yields, higher purity and lower costs. • Patent number: 4957715
Abstract: A process for the removal of carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and alkyl mercaptans from a hydrocarbon-containing feed gas:(a) contacting the feed gas with an adsorbent capable of removing hydrogen sulfide and alkyl mercaptans from the feed gas at effective conditions to produce a treated gas having reduced concentrations of hydrogen sulfide alkyl mercaptans;(b) contacting the treated gas with a liquid medium capable of removing carbon dioxide hydrogen sulfide and alkyl mercaptans from the treated gas at effective conditions to produce a product gas having reduced concentrations of carbon dioxide hydrogen sulfide and alkyl mercaptans;(c) contacting a spent absorbent laden with hydrogen sulfide and alkyl mercaptans with a normally liquid fraction at effective desorption conditions to produce a regenerated adsorbent and a regeneration effluent having increased concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and alkyl mercaptans; and(d) utilizing the regenerated adsorbent as at least a portion of the adsorbent in step (a).

  • Patent number: 4876394
Abstract: In the production of methyl tert.-alkyl ethers by the reaction of methanol with isoalkylenes, the formation of dimethyl ether as an undesirable reaction by-product is reduced by recycling dimethyl ether to the reactor, advantageously in amounts sufficient to establish an equilibrium between the amount of dimethyl ether imparted to the reactor by way of recycle and the amount of dimethyl ether leaving the reactor as a portion of the reaction product whereby the formation of dimethyl ether in the reactor is essentially nil. In the present invention the essential recycle of dimethyl ether is accomplished by providing an adsorption capacity for dimethyl ether in the adsorption unit for recovering unreacted methanol and recycling dimethyl ether in combination with recycled methanol to the reactor as an effluent from the methanol adsorption unit during regeneration with isobutylene-containing C.sub.4 hydrocarbon feedstock.

  • Patent number: 4740631
Abstract: In the process for preparing methyl tert.-alkyl ether comprising the steps of (a) contacting and reacting in the liquid phase a reaction mixture formed by combining a stream consisting essentially of C.sub.4 -C.sub.5 hydrocarbons and containing at least some proportion of isoalkylene and a stoichiometric excess of methanol, with respect to the isoalkylene, to form a reaction product comprising methyl tert.-alkyl ether, unreacted methanol and unreacted C.sub.4 -C.sub.5 hydrocarbons; (b) isolating the methyl tert.-alkyl ether from the reaction product; and (c) recovering the unreacted methanol from the residual portion of the reaction product; the improvement which comprises selectively adsorbing the methanol constituent of said residual reaction product in a bed of crystalline molecular sieve adsorbent and recovering same by desorption using as a purge-desorption stream, the C.sub.4 -C.sub.5 hydrocarbon stream used to prepare the initial reaction mixture.

  • Patent number: 4734199
Abstract: An improved liquid phase adsorption process is provided using a fixed bed system wherein the conventional post-regeneration bed-filling step and the post-adsorption bed-draining step are replaced by a displacement step. The bed volume of regeneration medium in a first bed of the system undergoing the final stage of regeneration cool-down is passed directly into a second bed of the system in the final stage of the adsorption step whereby the bed volume of void-space feedstock in said second bed is removed therefrom by displacement, thus effectively accomplishing in a single operation the filling step in the first bed and the draining step in the second bed.
