Patent number: 7275408Abstract: Apparatus and method for simultaneously adjusting the gram load and radius geometry height of a head suspension by scanning a spring region of the head suspension with a laser beam. The incremental height difference between left and right legs of a spring region of the suspension may also be concurrently corrected. Apparatus and method for measuring the radius geometry height are provided by two or more non-contacting optical probes. A nitrogen atmosphere may be maintained in the region scanned.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 2003Date of Patent: October 2, 2007Assignee: Hutchinson Technology IncorporatedInventors: Senthil Balasubramaniam, Trent A. Johnson, Derek J. Schanil, Roger W. Schmitz, Stephen P. Toperzer, Hryhory T. Koba, Timothy G. Rice, Paul E. Schwing, Blair M. Erickson, Mohamed Salah H. Khlif

Patent number: 6784398Abstract: An apparatus for adjusting twist curvature of a slider is provided, wherein the slider has a bearing surface, a back surface, which is opposite to the bearing surface, a longitudinal axis and a transverse axis. The apparatus includes a light source adapted to produce a light beam capable of altering material stresses in a working surface of the slider. The apparatus further includes an apparatus for obtaining a measure of the twist curvature of the bearing surface and for scanning the light beam across the working surface in a pattern selected to alter material stresses in the working surface asymmetrically with respect to the longitudinal axis and the transverse axis based on the measure of the twist curvature so as to induce a change in the twist curvature.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2002Date of Patent: August 31, 2004Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Mohamed-Salah H. Khlif, Richard A. Strom

Patent number: 6756287Abstract: A method is used for forming sliders for use in a disc drive actuation system. The method comprises providing a wafer formed of a substrate having a base coat and an overcoat. Wafer-level notch lanes having a first width extend across the wafer in a first direction. The overcoat is removed from the wafer-level notch lanes. The wafer is sliced along a portion of the wafer-level lanes through the base coat to form a channel. The wafer is mechanically sliced through the substrate along slice lanes that extend across the wafer in the first direction to differentiate the wafer into bars. The bars are cut in a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction to form the sliders.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2002Date of Patent: June 29, 2004Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Mohamed Salah H. Khlif, Gordon M. Jones, Paul E. Gallup, Jumna P. Ramdular

Slider having independently controlled crown and cross curvature and method of controlling curvature
Patent number: 6662069Abstract: An apparatus and method for controlling cross and crown curvatures of a bearing surface is provided. The apparatus obtains a measure of the cross and crown curvatures. Material stresses are altered in a working surface of the slider within a cross curvature adjust area based on the measure of the cross curvature. The cross curvature adjust area is defined such that altering material stresses within the cross curvature adjust area induces a change in the cross curvature while inducing substantially no change in the crown curvature. Material stresses are altered in the working surface of the slider within a crown curvature adjust area based on the measure of the crown curvature. The crown curvature adjust area is defined such that altering material stresses within the crown curvature adjust area induces a change in the crown curvature while inducing substantially no change in the cross curvature.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2000Date of Patent: December 9, 2003Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventor: Mohamed-Salah H. Patent number: 6627909Abstract: An apparatus for adjusting curvature of a disc head slider having a bearing surface is provided. The apparatus includes a light source and an apparatus for controlling the light source. The light source is adapted to produce a light beam capable of altering material stresses in a working surface of the slider. The apparatus for controlling the light source is adapted for obtaining a measure of first and second curvature characteristics of the bearing surface and for scanning the light beam across the working surface in a pattern to alter the material stresses in the working surface such that the first and second curvature characteristics move to within predetermined specifications. The pattern is based on the measures of the first and second curvature characteristics and estimates of responses in the first and second curvature characteristics to the pattern.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 2002Date of Patent: September 30, 2003Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventor: Mohamed-Salah H. Patent number: 6548009Abstract: An apparatus and method for controlling twist curvature of a disc head slider is provided, where the slider has a bearing surface, a back surface, which is opposite to the bearing surface, a longitudinal axis and a transverse axis. The apparatus obtains a measure of the twist curvature of the bearing surface and selectively alters material stresses in a working surface of the slider. The material stresses are altered asymmetrically with respect to the longitudinal axis and the transverse axis based on the measure of the twist curvature to induce a change in the twist curvature.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2000Date of Patent: April 15, 2003Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Mohamed-Salah H.
