Publication number: 20250090801Abstract: The disclosure provides for a variable stiffness catheter. The catheter may include an inner layer forming an inner lumen, a middle layer surrounding the inner layer, and an outer layer surrounding the middle layer. The middle layer may form a lumen and may include a plurality of strings within the lumen. The catheter may also include a wrapping weaved through the plurality of strings of the middle layer. Applying a vacuum, actuating by applying negative pressure, or evacuating fluid from the lumen of the middle layer alters a frictional force between the inner layer and the outer layer or between elements of the middle layer and thereby changes the catheter's flexural rigidity over a defined region.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 4, 2024Publication date: March 20, 2025Inventors: Mohamed Zayed, Guy Genin, Eric Leuthardt, Michael Qiu, Birdie Lee, Joshua Osbun

Publication number: 20240285001Abstract: Among the various aspects of the present disclosure is the provision of an aerosol containment mask and methods of use thereof. An aerosol containment mask is described that minimizes aerosol release during insertion or removal of an airway management device or gastric tube. Methods of insertion and removal of an airway management device or gastric tube are also described wherein the aerosol containment mask is employed.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 28, 2024Publication date: August 29, 2024Applicant: Washington UniversityInventors: Mohamed Zayed, John Cashin

Publication number: 20240138838Abstract: An anastomosis device for joining a first and second end of a vascular vessel is disclosed that includes a polymer cylinder ending in opposed first and second vascular-retaining ends configured for insertion into the first and second ends of the vascular vessel respectively. Each vascular-retaining end includes a plurality of bristles protruding outward. The device also includes at least one moiety covalently coupled to the surface of the device. The at least one moiety is selected from at least one anti-coagulant, at least one cell-specific binding peptide, and any combination thereof.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 15, 2023Publication date: May 2, 2024Applicant: Washington UniversityInventors: Xiaowei Li, Justin Sacks, William Moritz, Emran Madatov, Mohamed Zayed

Patent number: 11490910Abstract: The disclosure provides for an adjustable catheter system with isovolumetric suction and restoration of fluid for the removal of a thrombus and a method of use thereof. The catheter system includes an inner catheter and an outer sheath surrounding at least a portion of the inner catheter. The inner catheter may include at least three lumina extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the inner catheter, at least one infusion fenestration along the infusion segment, and a distal encapsulation balloon at the distal end. The outer sheath may include at least three lumina extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the outer sheath and a proximal encapsulation balloon at the distal end. The catheter system may further include an agitator for mechanical morcellation of the thrombus.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 2021Date of Patent: November 8, 2022Assignee: Washington UniversityInventors: Eric Leuthardt, Mohamed Zayed, Guy Genin, Joshua Osbun, Gayan De Silva, Sanghun A. Lee, Dillon Williams, Alexander Wirtz

Patent number: 11369381Abstract: An arteriovenous graft and methods of reducing the risk of graft thrombosis and extending patency of the arteriovenous graft are provided herein. The arteriovenous graft is operable for attaching to a vein at a venous anastomosis. In some aspects, the arteriovenous graft includes a plurality of grooves at a venous anastomosis end of the arteriovenous graft and the venous anastomoses may be arranged such that the arteriovenous graft and the vein meet at an angle of 30° or less.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2020Date of Patent: June 28, 2022Assignee: Washington UniversityInventors: Mohamed Zayed, Dillon Williams, Guy Genin, Eric Leuthardt
