  • Publication number: 20040162573
Abstract: An endcap for a lancing device includes a contact face with a pattern of ribs or pressure points used to massage skin around a lancet site to force blood for testing from a puncture at the lanced site. The pattern of ribs includes channels defined between the ribs which do not apply pressure on the skin during massaging such that blood flows under the skin below the channels to the puncture. Massaging is performed by applying the contact face under constant pressure to the skin, rocking the contact face, rotating the contact face, or pumping the contact face.

  • Patent number: 6364889
Abstract: It has been discovered that the use of a substantially free-standing voice coil within a lancing device in coordination and combination with a stationary magnet and electronic circuit renders a much improved lancing device. The minimal weight of the free standing voice coil and the attractive forces of the magnet allow the battery-powered electronic circuit to maintain excellent control over the advancement and retraction of a lancet. When the electronic lancing device is initiated by a user, the voltage source within the electronic lancing device provides sufficient current through the voice coil such that the coil and lancet are repulsed from the magnet and propelled into the puncture site.

  • Patent number: 5518689
Abstract: A diffused light reflectance readhead is disclosed. The readhead employs an improved light emitting diode (LED) providing a more strongly collimated beam of light around a beam axis onto a reagent test pad. The reagent test pad is supported on a strip guide at an angle .alpha. of 5 degrees with respect to the perpendicular of the beam axis. It has been discovered that when .alpha. is between 3 and 8 degrees that specular reflection is dramatically reduced in relation to the small reduction in reflected light received by a sensor. The diffuse reflected light travels to the sensor by passing through a staircase optical baffle at an angle of 45 degrees to the perpendicular of the beam axis. The sensor converts the optical signal into an electrical one for processing and analysis. One embodiment of the present invention can detect the presence of glucose in a blood sample.

  • Patent number: 5207984
Abstract: A test device having a semicrater sample application site attached or associated with a substrate. The semicrater sample application site has walls of nonuniform height surrounding the area designed to receive the application of sample. In particular, the walls of the semicrater on one side are higher than the walls of the semicrater on the opposite side. This facilitates the application of a small amount of sample directly onto the desired sample application site.

  • Patent number: 5008077
Abstract: An easily grasped reagent strip is disclosed. The reagent strip includes a handle that is elevated or spaced from a flat surface on which the reagent strip is placed. The handle is formed or bent to extend laterally from the rest of the reagent strip. Alternatively, ribs or buttons may be formed in the handle of the reagent strip to space the handle from a flat surface. The reagent strip can also include informative tactile indicia such as braille to inform a visually impaired or blind person of the type of reagent strip and the location of the reagent pad on the strip.

  • Patent number: 4990154
Abstract: A lancet assembly includes a reusable base unit that defines a handle for a lancet assembly and houses a biasing mechanism for driving a lancet into the finger of a user. The base unit includes a spring biased hammer that once cocked, can be released to drive a lancet. A lancet is included in a disposable end cap that may be releasible attached to one end of the base unit. The end cap includes integral resilience spring fingers that maintain the lancet completely within the end cap before and after use, and functions to return the lancet after engagement of the lancet and hammer. The end cap can be rotated to orient the end cap relative to a user's finger to control the depth of penetration of the lancet into the user's finger.
