  • Patent number: 9204403
Abstract: An exemplary method of controlling communications that may include high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) traffic includes setting a first power limit below an allowable power limit. A second power limit is set that is below the first power limit. A determination is made whether there is any HSDPA traffic. The first power limit is selected for non-HSDPA traffic when there is no HSDPA traffic. The second power limit is selected for non-HSDPA traffic when there is HSDPA traffic.

  • Patent number: 8428638
Abstract: A method of controlling a base station, a network controller, a base station, a telecommunications network and a computer program product are disclosed. A method of controlling a base station (140; 150; 160) in a mobile telecommunications network (220) comprises the steps of: (i) determining whether a base station within the mobile telecommunications network is not supporting user equipment (110; 120; 130) and, if so, then (ii) signalling the base station to reduce its transmission power. An assessment is made as to whether a base station is currently supporting user equipment. If a base station is currently supporting user equipment, then that base station is unlikely to be a candidate to have its power reduced since support to that user equipment needs to be maintained. However, if a base station is not supporting user equipment, then that base station would appear to be a likely candidate for transmission power reduction, thereby saving power in the network at those locations where it is possible to do so.

  • Patent number: 7239875
Abstract: A method is provided of establishing or releasing a radio connection between a first mobile user station and a first cell for wireless telecommunications during a call with the first mobile user station. This is both whilst the call continues and dependent upon at least one predetermined criterion being met. This occurs in a network for wireless telecommunications handling calls with various data rates to mobile user stations such that some of the mobile user stations at a time have multiple radio connections to the network via multiple cells. A pilot signal is sent between the first cell and the first mobile user station. Received signal quality of the pilot signal between the first cell and the first mobile user station is detected. At least one predetermined criterion is selected dependent upon data rate of the call, and if it is determining that said signal quality of the pilot signal meets said at least one predetermined criterion, said radio connection is released or established.

  • Publication number: 20040252719
Abstract: A radio telecommunications network is provided comprising a first station and a second station. The first station is operative to send packets of data to the second station. The packets are of a predetermined length. The second station is operative to receive the data and send to the first station indicators of which packets of data from the first station have been accurately received. The second station is also operative to measure received signal quality and to send information of received signal quality to the first station. The first station is operative to select dependent upon said information a different length for further packets to be sent to the second station.

  • Publication number: 20040248554
Abstract: A method is provided of paying from an account by a customer having a mobile user terminal. The method comprises the following steps. The phone number of mobile user terminal of the customer is provided to an authenticating network. The authenticating network uses the phone number to inspect a database relating phone numbers to account indicators and associated customer identity indicators so as to obtain an account indicator and a customer identity indicator of the mobile user terminal of the customer. A call connection between the authenticating network and the mobile user terminal is set up. A customer identity indicator is sent from the mobile user terminal to the authenticating network. The authenticating network checks that the customer identity indicator received from the mobile user terminal accords with that expected from the inspection of the database. If so the authenticating network indicates that the customer is authentic so as to enable the payment to proceed.
