  • Publication number: 20200284217
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for adjusting amount of directly injected fuel scavenged via a second exhaust manifold of a split exhaust engine system. In one example, a method may include adjusting a start of injection of a fuel direct injection into an engine cylinder, the cylinder including a first exhaust valve coupled to a first exhaust manifold and a second exhaust valve coupled to a second exhaust manifold, the second exhaust manifold coupled to an intake of the engine, based on a closing timing of the second exhaust valve and dependent on an operating condition, and adjusting a position of a bypass valve of the second exhaust manifold based on the adjusted start of injection. In this way, the amount of scavenged fuel may be increased or decreased based on the operating condition.

  • Patent number: 10767587
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for adjusting an amount of water injected upstream of a group of cylinders based on a determined maldistribution of water among cylinders during a water injection event. In one example, a method may include injecting a first amount of water upstream of a first group of cylinders and a different, second amount of water upstream of a second group of cylinders based on operating conditions of the respective cylinder groups. Further, the method may include adjusting water injection and engine operating parameters in response the evaporated and/or condensed portion of water.

  • Patent number: 10753290
Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for operating an engine that includes a knock control system that may determine contributions of individual noise sources to an engine background noise level. The contributions of the individual noise sources may be the basis for establishing the presence or absence of knock in one or more engine cylinders. The contributions of individual noise sources may be determined when engine cylinders are deactivated.

  • Publication number: 20200263653
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for estimating ethanol content in fuel, water content in fuel, and an age of the fuel in a vehicle engine. In one example, a method may include estimating fuel ethanol content, water content, or fuel age based on a resonant frequency (f) of pressure pulsations, a change in fuel rail pressure (?p), and a damping coefficient (?) of pressure pulsations in the fuel rail as estimated after a fuel injection or a pump stroke. One or more engine operating parameters may be adjusted based on the estimated fuel ethanol content, water content, and fuel age.

  • Patent number: 10746153
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for operating a variable displacement engine that includes a knock control system. Fuel injection timing and cylinder firing patterns may be adjusted to maintain engine background noise levels so that the presence or absence of engine knock may be more reliably detected. Further, select variable engine displacement modes may be avoided so that engine background noise level changes may be reduced to improve engine knock detection.

  • Patent number: 10738742
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for coordinating water usage with spark usage based on the effect on an engine torque ratio. Water is injected based on torque ratio at a current spark timing relative to torque ratio at borderline knock to improve the impact of the water injection on the engine performance. Manifold water injection and direct water injected are coordinated based on intake manifold humidity.

  • Patent number: 10731580
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for determining a dilution of recirculated gases, including blowthrough air, combusted exhaust gas, and fuel vapor, in a split exhaust engine. In one example, the dilution rate may be calculated using a feedforward model that includes determining a pressure differential across a region in an intake passage, mapped engine parameters such as gas temperature, and exhaust valve timing. Engine operations such as spark advance and fuel injection may be adjusted according to the modeled rate to reduce engine knock and improve combustion efficiency.

  • Patent number: 10648413
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for determining a dilution of recirculated gases, including blowthrough air, combusted exhaust gas, and fuel vapor, in a split exhaust engine. In one example, the dilution rate may be calculated using a steady state model based on temperature measurements from an intake region of the engine.
