Abstract: Certain aspects provide techniques for image optimization. A method includes receiving a first request for an image, wherein the first request comprises a cache key for the image; determining that the image corresponding to the cache key is not in the data storage; retrieving an original image of the image indicated by the first request; sending a first response to the first request, wherein the first response comprises an interim image and an image expiration time; converting the original image to an optimized image, wherein the optimized image comprises a format and dimensions corresponding to the image URL and the header of the cache key; receiving, via the API at a time after the image expiration time, a second request for the image; querying the data storage for the image based on the cache key of the second request; and sending a second response that comprises the optimized image.
