  • Patent number: 4883726
Abstract: The invention relates to a multi-cell battery of electro-chemical cells of the type which is likely to be severely damaged and which is apt to release a substantial quantity of heat when short-circuited.According to the invention, the multi-cell unit is provided with a certain filler in the space between the constituent electrochemical cells, which is either a solid with a melting point in a predetermined range of temperature, or a liquid. The filler ought to be electrically non-conducting, and its quantity ought to have an adequate heat capacity and it ought also to be capable to transfer heat to adjacent cells.

  • Patent number: 4755440
Abstract: The invention relates to an electrochemical cell which is safe even under adverse conditions and abuse. The cells comprise an alkaline metal anode, a current collector and an inorganic oxyhalide liquid cathode which contains an alkaline earth metal salt in a suitable solvent, such as thionyl chloride. The cell may contain sulfur dioxide dissolved in the solvent. Suitable salts are alkaline earth metal aluminum chlorides.

  • Patent number: 4456665
Abstract: There is provided an electrochemical reserve cell of short activation time, which comprises a calcium dischargeable calcium alloy anode essentially devoid of alkali metal, an inorganic oxyhalide liquid cathode serving also as solvent for the electrolyte salt, an electrolyte salt consisting of Lewis acid and a calcium Lewis base, said Lewis acid being in excess of the Lewis base, and an inert current collector, said electrolyte solution being stored separately from said electrode compartment, means being provided for contacting said solution with said electrodes when the cell is to be activated.
