  • Patent number: 5071700
Abstract: Disclosed herein are a carbon fiber-reinforced carbon composite material composed of carbon as a matrix and carbon fiber as a reinforcement, and also a process for producing the same. The composite material is produced by coating nonwoven fabrics of carbon fiber or a blend of carbon fiber and organic fiber with a filler-containing liquid, laminating the nonwoven fabrics one over another, and subjecting the laminated nonwoven fabrics to needle punching repeatedly with a plurality of needles, thereby yielding a prepreg of three-dimensional structure, and carbonizing and calcining the thus obtained prepreg.

  • Patent number: 4409284
Abstract: The invention is concerned with a porous molding obtained by extruding a mixture containing at least one material selected from porous inorganic materials and carbonizable organic materials and at least one binder therefor in the form of threads or strings, accumulating the thready or stringy extrudates to form a mass, and then drying and sintering the accumulated mass. When the at least one material is an organic material, the sintered mass is carbonized in a non-oxidative atmosphere and then activated as usual.

  • Patent number: 4399052
Abstract: An activated carbonaceous honeycomb body is prepared by extruding a tempered mass containing a thermosetting resin such as phenol resin, drying and solidifying the green honeycomb body, preheating the same in a nonoxidizing atmosphere at a heating rate of 30.degree. C./hr or lower to a temperature between 500.degree. and 1,100.degree. C. until the hydrogen content of the resulting C-matrix has been lowered to 2% or less, and then heating the thus-preheated honeycomb body in an activating atmosphere to a temperature between 600.degree. and 1,000.degree. C. until the ratio of the total thickness of resulting activated carbon layers to that of the remaining glassy carbon layer in the thickness direction of each wall of the honeycomb body has reached a value not greater than 30. The activated carbonaceous honeycomb body exhibits good refractoriness and thermal shock proofness as well as pertains excellent strength, particularly, against compression forces.
