  • Patent number: 6478542
Abstract: A variable pitch propeller has a centrifugal lock for blocking blade pitch changes from a normal range of forward pitch angles toward both feathered and reverse positions at rotational speeds greater than a predetermined threshold. The lock mechanism has a pair of stop members rigidly connected to a rack yoke member that has geared engagement with respective propeller blade pinions, and a pair of mass elements that move outwardly in response to centrifugal force to block movement of the lock members outside of the normal range. A pair of springs are connected between the mass elements for biasing them inwardly from paths of the lock members. The yoke is displaced axially by an actuator having an annular hydraulic cylinder. A hydraulic control unit having a motorized leadscrew coupled to another annular hydraulic cylinder is fluid coupled to the actuator, and a simple control circuit provides colored indications of pitch settings.

  • Patent number: 6276898
Abstract: A variable-pitch marine propeller system has a propeller unit for mounting on a drive shaft, and a power unit including a stationary annular hydraulic cylinder for operating the propeller unit, a hydraulic remote control unit being fluid-coupled to the power unit. The propeller unit is provided with a shear pin assembly that is serviceable for replacing sheared pins without removing the propeller unit from the drive shaft. An annular piston of the hydraulic cylinder is coupled to a ring-shaped actuator yoke by a roller thrust bearing, the actuator yoke axially displacing a mating yoke of the propeller unit with which the actuator yoke is allowed to rotate. The piston operates in a sealed environment for the exclusion of water from the separately sealed surfaces of the cylinder itself. In one configuration, the propeller unit is replaceable without disturbing the sealed environment of the annular piston. The control unit includes a hydraulic control cylinder that is operated by a threaded piston rod.

Alternatively, the control cylinder is actuated by a lever having biasing springs and an adjustable brake.

  • Patent number: 5058945
Abstract: A vehicle streamliner has a balloon or bag member that is supported by a belt member that is tensioned about a generally cylindrical longitudinal perimeter surface of the vehicle. The bag member can be configured for support against an end face area of the vehicle, and preferred shapes for the bag member are disclosed. An array of vortex generators are provided proximate a forward extremity of the belt member for promoting attached flow ahead of and over the bag member. A pair of the belt members can connect the bag member between tandem articulated vehicle elements for smoothly covering a gap between the elements, the bag member being formed of a thin, stretchable material that assumes a pleated condition when relaxed, the pleats disappearing when the vehicle elements are proximately aligned.

  • Patent number: 4702509
Abstract: Apparatus for streamlining a tractor-trailer truckcomprises an inflatable balloon bag member at an end of the trailer. Supporting attachments for the bag automatically lock when the bag member is inflated but may be easily disconnected once the bag is deflated. The attachments are hinged for loading door clearance, a top attachment being hinged forwardly of the end for swinging the deflated bag to one side of the trailer. A belt timber reenforces the bag between the attachments, the bag being otherwise self-supporting. Both front and rear bag members cooperate to significantly reduce aerodynamic drag and fuel consumption on long hauls.

  • Patent number: 4362467
Abstract: There is disclosed a hydraulically-controllable variable pitch propeller device capable of being removably mounted on a propeller shaft. The device includes a rotatable mounting flange and a stationary hydraulic mechanism located between the mounting flange and the propeller hub. The hydraulic mechanism includes a cylinder and a piston. The device also includes means for varying the pitch of the propeller blades in response to movement of the piston within the cylinder. The varying means includes a thrust face cooperating with a face of the piston, both the thrust face and piston face having mating races in which ball bearings are mounted. The device also includes a novel control mechanism for regulating the amount of hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic cylinder for controlling the location of the piston and thus the pitch of the propeller blades.
