  • Publication number: 20170179587
Abstract: Various methods, apparatus, devices and systems are provided for electrically short antennas for efficient broadband transmission. In one example, among others, a system includes a segmentally time-variant antenna and a segment controller that can control conductivity of individual segments of the segmentally time-variant antenna. The conductivity of the individual segments is modulated to allow a pulse to propagate from the proximal end to the distal end of the segmentally time-variant antenna and impede a reflection of the pulse from propagating back to the proximal end of the segmentally time-variant antenna. In another embodiment, a method includes injecting a pulse at a first end of a segmentally time-variant antenna and modulating conductivity of individual segments to allow the pulse to propagate to a second end of the segmentally time-variant antenna and impede a reflection of the pulse from propagating back to the first end.

  • Publication number: 20160308224
Abstract: Productive electrochemical reactions can often occur most effectively in proximity to a separator dividing an electrochemical cell into two half-cells. Parasitic reactions can often occur at locations more removed from the separator. Parasitic reactions are generally undesirable in flow batteries and other electrochemical systems, since they can impact operating performance. Flow batteries having a decreased incidence of parasitic reactions can include, a first half-cell containing a first electrode, a second half-cell containing a second electrode, a separator disposed between the first half-cell and the second half-cell and contacting the first and second electrodes, a first bipolar plate contacting the first electrode, and a second bipolar plate contacting the second electrode, where a portion of the first electrode or the first bipolar plate contains a dielectric material.

  • Publication number: 20160293979
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods and apparatuses for determining the ratio of oxidized and reduced forms of a redox couple in solution, each method comprising: (a) contacting a first stationary working electrode and a first counter electrode to the solution; (b) applying a first potential at the first working electrode and measuring a first constant current; (c) applying a second potential at the first working electrode and measuring a second constant current; wherein the sign of the first and second currents are not the same; and wherein the ratio of the absolute values of the first and second currents reflects the ratio of the oxidized and reduced forms of the redox couple in solution.

  • Publication number: 20160254562
Abstract: The invention concerns methods of determining the state of charge of a half-cell within a redox flow battery, the method comprising: (i) measuring the rate of change in equilibrium half-cell reduction potential of the electrolyte as charge is passed into the electrolyte solution within the cell; and (ii) correlating said rate of change in equilibrium half-cell reduction potential with the state of charge of said half-cell. Other aspects of the invention concern balancing the state of charge of a flow battery and methods of calibrating an oxidation/reduction probe.

  • Patent number: 8073322
Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosed technology are designed for creation of a photographic image comprising an upper and lower portion from two rolls of film whereby the picture is created by simultaneous exposure within a single camera housing, or emulation thereof. This is accomplished in one embodiment by wrapping two rolls of film around a spool, one above the other, such that the rolls pull off the reel in parallel and onto a single take-up spool. Thus, when the shutter opens, both rolls of film are simultaneously exposed, and an image forms half on one and half on the other. In another embodiment, a camera comprises two film chambers (which may be a single chamber with divider adapting the chamber to hold two rolls of film), one above the other, and a roll is loaded into each film chamber. Embodiments may be used to breathe new life into discontinued film formats, such as 70 mm film cameras by using two 35 mm rolls of film.

  • Publication number: 20080037204
Abstract: A modular laptop computer for accommodating selective placement and customization of user interface components. The computer includes a cavity having a connection or interface or coupling region, such as a universal serial bus jack for connecting to or mating with a corresponding interface on each component. The interface connections in the cavity are connected to one or more buses for providing an interface between the attached components and a computer processor. In this manner, the components such as keyboards, trackballs, drives, music players and so forth, can all be rearranged within the cavity in the positions of the user's preference.

  • Publication number: 20050211829
Abstract: The invention is directed to a motive structure that, in one embodiment, is comprised of a body, a first magnetic field generator, a second magnetic field generator, and a controller for controlling the respective application of first and second currents to the first and second magnetic field generators such that there is a period of time during which: (a) said first current has terminated, (b) a first magnetic field resulting from the application of said first current to said first magnetic field generator means persists; (c) said second current is present, and (d) a second magnetic field resulting from the application of said second current to said second magnetic field generator means is present. During this period of time, the first magnetic field is decoupled from the body and, as such, provides a platform that at least one of the second current and the second magnetic field can interact so that a force is applied to the body.

  • Patent number: 5529372
Abstract: A security system for an automobile having a motorized seat is set forth. The seat is equipped with a set of longitudinal guide channels and rollers which move in the channels to move the seat forwardly or rearwardly. A motor drive system is connected to the seat. A CPU memory stores instructions for operation of the motor drive to thereby vary the position of the seat with respect to the rails. When moved excessively forwardly, the seat is positioned so that a person cannot operate the steering wheel or control pedals of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4701843
Abstract: A computer memory including a memory subsystem controller having a circuit for providing a plurality of block select signals and a raw address. A plurality of memory blocks is provided, with one of the memory blocks being provided for each of the block select signals from the memory subsystem controller. Each of the memory blocks includes random access memory (RAM) devices for storing data, and a refresh circuit for refreshing its associated RAM devices independent of the refreshing of the RAM devices of the other blocks. The refreshing of the refresh circuit occurs, if possible, when its associated memory block is not selected by its corresponding block select signal from the memory subsystem controller. A re-establishing circuit is included in each memory block which receives a row address from the memory subsystem controller and re-establishes the received row address in its RAM devices after they have been refreshed.

  • Patent number: 4169253
Abstract: An improved electronic structure for achieving a frequency offset between two or more YIG devices tuned by a single electro-magnet. The structure does not require different sizes of YIG spheres, different magnet gap spacings, or modified coil windings on the electro-magnet, but relies entirely upon the anisotropy variations of the single crystal structure of the YIG spheres when they are mounted on respective tuning rods on a specific axis and rotated under a variable field for a fixed frequency input.
