  • Publication number: 20140140089
Abstract: A lighting device comprises a clear acrylic rod provided with a diffusive reflective strip along one side. Light is emitted into the rod by way of an LED provided at one end of the rod. Most of this light travels along the rod having one or more total internal reflection off the sides until it encounters the reflective strip. At this point, the light is diffusely reflected back across the rod and thereby provides a diffuse beam of light in a desired direction for use in illumination. In order to prevent light emitted from the LED directly exiting the rod and thereby creating a potential hazard, side guards are provided. The extent of the side guards is selected such that all rays a emitted directly from the LED are blocked.

  • Patent number: 8162515
Abstract: A lighting device (10) for use within a light box or light panel and comprising a housing with generally parallel upper and lower walls (11, 12) and diverging side walls (13, 14) with one or more LEDs (18) disposed within the housing on a back wall (15) thus to project light outwardly from the housing. Several such devices may be disposed within a light box or light panel to project light across the latter which light is then diffused before exiting from a front display panel or the like. The diffused light conceals the lighting devices within the light box or light panel. Such devices are intended to replace conventional fluorescent or neon lighting tubes or tungsten lights to produce substantially uniform light distribution by diffusion within the light box or light panel and incorporating low voltage and low power consuming light sources.

  • Patent number: 7819567
Abstract: A lighting device comprising a transparent acrylic or glass rod (10) with a series of bores (11) drilled in parallel through a part of the rod and spaced apart along its length, each bore (11) containing a pair of LEDs (12) such that the light emitted therefrom is diffused along the length of the rod, and a reflective strip (17) disposed along the rod to reflect a beam of light outwardly from the rod (10) in a direction parallel to the axes of the bores (11) to provide illumination for display purposes or ambient light.

  • Publication number: 20080186731
Abstract: A lamp comprising a base (10) having separate parts (11, 12) which may be brought together around, and to make contact with, an electrical supply cable (13). In the base (10) there is provided one or more LEDs and electrical circuitry, and a solid acrylic rod (18) is mounted in the base to receive light from the or each LED. The total internal reflection within the rod, and the lensing effect of a domed upper end (19) produce a beam of light equivalent to a standard incandescent light bulb but with low power input and increased durability when compared with an incandescent bulb. Several such lamps may be grouped together to form a downlighter, or spaced apart along the supply cable (13) and mounted externally on a building for decoration and display purposes.

  • Publication number: 20070217189
Abstract: An illumination device comprising an elongate rod (10) or strip of translucent material located within a tube (11) to define a gas space (12) therebetween, the rod having a disrupted surface by way of undulation (13) or striation (17), and a light source located at one or both ends of the device to cause light travelling along the rod to exit traversely to its axis. Primary diffusion occurs within the rod by total internal reflection. Secondary diffusion occurs within the gas space, and a substantially uniform light output is generated by the surrounding tube. For longer lengths of rod the striation may be increased within a central region (21, 22) thus to ensure uniformity of light output throughout the length. If required, a beam of light may be generated by providing a reflector (15, 16) within the gas space (12).

  • Publication number: 20070053203
Abstract: An illumination device comprising an elongate rod (10) of a transparent acrylic material mounted on a base (11) in which is housed an array of LED's (15) which illuminate directly a lower end face of the rod (10) so that light is passed along the rod, and a conical or otherwise shaped reflecting surface (12) at the opposite end of the rod (10) and disposed obliquely thus to reflect light outwardly in a direction generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of the rod. A translucent or opaque tube (22) may be disposed around the rod other than in the upper end region thereof. The device may serve as a road hazard light, a garden path light or a table, standard or wall light.

  • Patent number: 6953276
Abstract: An illuminated device comprises a light source and an illumination plate, having a first face and a second face, separated by edges, and a diffusion cover, having an inner surface. The diffusion cover overlies the illumination plate and is shaped to form an enclosure defined by the inner surface and the first face. The light source delivers light into the illumination plate via the edges. The light undergoes scattering or primary diffusion within the plate, before emerging from the first face at shallow angles, into the enclosure. A reflective layer prevents light emerging from the second face. Within the enclosure, the light undergoes secondary diffusion to provide uniform illumination of the cover and a color, graphic or message superposed thereon.
