  • Patent number: 6071415
Abstract: A process for the purification of water to render it fit for drinking. It is passed first through a halogenated resin and after this through activated carbon impregnated with silver, which contains a comparatively high silver content, of at least two percent by weight, and up to about 14 weight percent. A purification system for carrying out such process comprising a sequence of a layer of halogenated resin followed by activated carbon impregnated with at least two weight percent silver. The impregnated silver absorbs efficiently a high percentage of bromide/bromine, iodide/iodine or mixtures of these.

  • Patent number: 5573665
Abstract: A water purification through-flow device which comprises a cylindrical shell which is divided lengthwise into two or more sectors, separated from each other by partitions, with a cover fitting one end of the shell, in which cover there is provided an inlet for water which is to be purified. Depending on the number of sectors, the outlet is provided in the same cover if there are two sectors, and in the other cover if there are three sectors: the water flowing through each of the sectors one after the other. The individual sectors may contain the same purification substance, or different sectors can contain different ones. There may be provided mechanical filtration means for the water passing through the device, and there may be provided means for closing the various sectors during storage.

  • Patent number: 5314968
Abstract: A polyhalide bactericidal resin, of the demand type, based on halogens, the preponderant being iodine. The release of iodine into the water which is purified is minimized, and contaminated water is rendered safe for human consumption. There are also provided devices for the decontamination of contaminated water, based on the use of the novel resins of the invention.Furthermore there is provided a process for the production of such resins based on the interaction of a strong base anion exchange resin, iodine, an iodine, a bromide and a persulfate oxidizing agent.

  • Patent number: 5110479
Abstract: Means are provided for use with water purification systems and for evalutating the quality of water, which impart a color to water passing through such means, said color being indicative of an excess of a certain ionic strength or of a change of pH beyond a predetermined value. There is also provided a highly efficient water purification system for the removal of a wide variety of contaminants, also equipped with a color release system when purification starts to fail.

  • Patent number: 4375346
Abstract: A diaphragm pump is described comprising a reciprocated diaphragm for expanding and contracting a chamber communicating with a passageway connecting the housing inlet and outlet for pumping a fluid therethrough, and a pair of check valves in the passageway permitting the fluid to flow only from the inlet to the outlet. The check valves are disposed along laterally-spaced parallel axes and provide a forward fluid flow through both valves in the same direction along the laterally-spaced parallel axes, the outlet of one check valve communicating with the inlet of the other via a folded section of the passageway having two 180.degree. bends. Such an arrangement enables the diaphragm pump to be constructed in compact and/or miniaturized form.According to another described feature, the diaphragm pump is constructed in combination with the peristaltic pump having an inlet for a liquid to be pumped, and an outlet connected to the inlet of the diaphragm pump. Both pumps are driven by a common drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 4340475
Abstract: A membrane separation cell is described comprising a stack of supporting members each supporting a membrane on each of its opposite faces and defining a permeate compartment therewith, and separating members interposed between the membranes of adjacent supporting members and defining feed solution compartments therewith. The separating members are plates formed with passageways connecting the feed solution compartments in series through the stack such that the feed solution flows through each feed solution compartment in an inward direction across one face of the separator plate and in an outward direction across its opposite face. The membrane supporting members are plates each formed with an outer rim having passageways for conducting the permeate from the permeate compartment in parallel out of the stack.

  • Patent number: 4338190
Abstract: An artificial kidney comprises means for introducing a prepared solution into the peritoneal cavity to draw toxic metabolites therefrom into the fluid, the fluid exiting from the cavity as peritoneal fluid; and a dialysis or ultrafilter separator containing a selective membrane having a high permeability to low molecular weight toxic metabolites but a low permeability to high molecular weight protein. The peritoneal fluid is circulated through the separator on one side of the selective membrane in the above-described closed-loop peritoneal circuit, the fluid exiting from that side of the membrane being returned to the peritoneal cavity. The artificial kidney further includes a single-pass reconstitution circuit wherein tap water is introduced into the inlet of a hyperfilter impermeable to ions and to organic matter; and a concentrate including sugar and salts is introduced into the water exiting from the permeate outlet of the hyperfilter to form a water concentrate solution.
