  • Patent number: 9282517
Abstract: Wireless transition timers associated with wireless transition states are adaptively controlled in relation to use of applications by user equipment (UE). A UE can include a transition management component (TMC) that can adaptively control wireless transition timers associated with wireless states based on application type, session content, or other factors. The TMC monitors data flow associated with an application and, for a current or subsequent communication session, controls the length of wireless transition timers and switching between wireless states to improve UE, application, and/or network performance while maintaining QOE for the user. The TMC can access a timer look-up table that maps wireless transition timers to application type, content type, user behavior, or other factors. The TMC also can desirably control maintaining persistence or always-on connections by controlling switching between wireless states using the adapted wireless transition timers.

  • Patent number: 9276859
Abstract: A wireless data access system is provided to ameliorate bursty traffic occurring in a radio communications link such as a WiFi, WiMAX, 3G or cellular telephone link to a wireless network access device. A data traffic event is detected relating to traffic in the link. The traffic event may be a traffic burst exceeding a predetermined threshold. Based on detecting the data traffic event, a free-space optical communications link is established to the network access device to handle the traffic burst. The established radio link may be used to set-up and coordinate the free-space optical link.

  • Patent number: 9270659
Abstract: Resource and memory use by applications used by user equipment (UE) can be adaptively controlled. A UE comprises a connection-manager kernel (CMKC) that can be embedded at the SOC level to facilitate resource and memory control at SOC level. CMKC operates in conjunction with an operating system kernel. CMKC comprises functional blocks that provide network enabler functions and observability APIs for network enhancement, traffic flow monitoring and filtering, QOE executive routines, and traffic flow time shifting. CMKC performs or provides analytics, security and firewall tags, cache management at SOC level, and policy enforcement. CMKC and a trusted memory operate in a trusted zone environment to facilitate secure operation. CMKC adaptively collects information from control registers and analytics, and maps such information to the trusted memory, which can be accessible to trusted APIs to facilitate enabling trusted applications to have knowledge of contextual network information.

  • Publication number: 20160050656
Abstract: Collecting state information about the resources of radio access networks (RANs) and the Access Point Names (APNs) enables this information to be provided to mobile stations which employ this information to determine which radio access technology (RAT) to employ for connecting to the wireless access network, and to determine which APN to use. This decision is made relative to each application that the mobile station is executing, and these decisions are, optionally, revisited periodically, or as significant changes in the state information are recognized.

  • Patent number: 9253095
Abstract: Application states of applications associated with a communication device can be network controlled. An application agent, associated with an application used by the communication device, controls transitioning the application between application states based on network indicators received or network events detected from a communication network. The application states include active state or doze state. An application management component associated with the communication network at least partially controls transitioning the application between application states to facilitate controlling network traffic or reducing network congestion. The application agent or application management component can map application states to various factors, including radio states, congestion level, application performance indicators, network policies, or user policies, to facilitate determining which application state to apply to an application at a given time.

  • Publication number: 20160029183
Abstract: An arrangement for providing, on an ad hoc basis, a closed user group (CUG) among a collection of pre-defined IP network users. A set of intelligent access devices, dispersed through the IP network, constantly transmit a set of pings associated with the defines CUGs to discover those devices within its communication range. The discovered IP addresses for each device is thus constantly updated, allowing group members to remain in constant contact (emulating an “always on” connection). The users feels they are always connected with group members and thus have instant access to voice/data/video sessions—much like hot lines or “always on” connections.

  • Patent number: 9241029
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for using an open application interface to enable communications between the components and sub-components of a complex system, such as an OSS system. In a first embodiment, one or more Intelligent Flow Engines (IFEs) are used to register all applications and/or components in the system. Once the applications have been registered, then a component requiring service from another application/component sends a request for service to an IFE. The IFE then determines which provider application can best provide the requested service and binds the requesting application with that provider application. In accordance with another embodiment, when a provider component is taken offline, e.g., for maintenance or to replace that component with a new or upgraded component, the applications of that component are un-registered and any applications that were bound to that component are seamlessly rerouted and are bound with another application if one is available.

  • Patent number: 9232399
Abstract: A network access credential can be shared among devices based on location information for a device. Location information can include timed fingerprint location information. In an aspect, location information can be associated with a location of user equipment. This location information can be correlated with network access credentials. Location information can be used to access a relevant network access credential. The relevant network access credential can be shared with other devices. In an embodiment, sharing a network access credential can be between mobile devices. In another embodiment, sharing a network access credential can be between a remote computing device and a mobile device. Sharing a credential can allow for access to a network without having to generate or input new credentials.

  • Publication number: 20150373544
Abstract: A method includes receiving, by a computing system of a first wireless network from a first device, a request to access a second wireless network secured with a network encryption key. The method includes determining that a user account associated with the first device permits access to the second wireless network. The method includes sending, to a registration device, a token that is usable by a second device to access the network encryption key. The method includes sending, via the first wireless network, the token to the first device for transmission of the token to the second device. The transmission of the token from the first device to the second device enables the second device to send a hash value based on the token to the registration device. The hash value enables the registration device to provide access to the network encryption key to the second device.

  • Patent number: 9154953
Abstract: A network provider can receive a request, via a first mobile device and a mobile wireless telephone network, for access to a wireless network secured with at least one encryption key and implemented by at least one wireless access point. In response to the request, the network provider can associate the first mobile device with a user account of a user and can provide a token to a registrar and to the first mobile device via the mobile wireless telephone network. The registrar can receive, from the first mobile device or a second mobile device associated the user via the wireless access point. After determining, based on the one or more hash values, that the first or second mobile device has possession of the token, the registrar can provide the encryption key to that mobile device.

  • Publication number: 20150249601
Abstract: Signaling-less call setup and teardown by employing observed Quality of Experience (QoE) and resource demands. A system provides an environment for supersonic treatment of observed QoE and Quality of Service (QoS) demands for mobile applications. Specifically, a monitoring component is employed to determine session state information associated with a traffic flow, which includes observed QoE and resource demand data. The session state information is stored in a shared memory location and can be analyzed to modify and/or create a network policy for the traffic flow. The network policy is applied to one or more traffic flows to minimize signaling exchanges between a communication network and a mobile station.

  • Publication number: 20150134809
Abstract: Resource use by applications used by user equipment (UE) is adaptively controlled. A UE can comprise a modem-network kernel component that can be well partitioned from modem operations and can facilitate adaptively controlling use of functional blocks for applications of the UE, and enhancing use of network resources in connection with use of applications by the UE. The kernel component can operate in a protected area of the baseband and can utilize APIs and interfaces available to it by existing modem stacks and UE operating systems. The kernel component can interact with the communication network to adaptively present network enabler functions to other parts of the system. The kernel component can facilitate managing secure communication with the communication network to facilitate proper cross-layer optimization practices, including capabilities for compression and decompression, rate shaping, and event notification associated with the communication network and UE subsystems.
