  • Publication number: 20070188932
Abstract: A magnetic head positioning mechanism is provided which is excellent in shock-resistance and can achieve high positioning accuracy. By constructing the magnetic head positioning mechanism so that a fine actuator section is composed of an actuator spring made from a thin steel plate, a base plate made from a thick steel plate to be junctioned to the actuator spring, stiffness of the fine actuator section in a vertical direction can be improved with flexibility of a driving spring section mounted on the actuator spring being still kept, that is, with sufficient positioning accuracy and satisfactory stroke being maintained. Moreover, by designing a strength of the fine actuator section so that the actuator spring and a holder arm do not overlap when the base plate is connected to the holder arm, the fine actuator section can be made thin and implementing of the fine actuator section among narrow plates in a positioning device is made easy.

  • Patent number: 6795603
Abstract: An analog beam-steering free-space optical switch for connecting and switching a plurality of optical signals includes a plurality of optical devices and electrostatic actuators for driving the optical devices. Each optical device is pivotally borne so as to allow rotation around a prescribed center of rotation, and each electrostatic actuator includes the substrate that holds the optical devices and a plurality of driving electrodes that are secured to the substrate. The application of electrostatic voltage between an optical device and the driving electrodes generates electrostatic driving torque for causing the optical device to tilt with respect to the substrate around the center of rotation, whereby the direction of reflection of an optical signal is changed. The plurality of driving electrodes are arranged in a radial pattern relative to the electrode center.

  • Patent number: 6172851
Abstract: A magnetic head slider of the present invention includes a generally C-shaped leading rail extending from the leading edge of an air bearing surface and concave toward the trailing edge of the same. A pair of trailing rails extend from substantially the center of the concavity of “C” of the leading rail and flared away from each other toward the trailing edge. The trailing rails are spaced by a preselected distance from each other in the vicinity of the concavity of the trailing rail, then extend toward the trailing edge while bending away from each other, and then respectively extend toward the right and left ends of the trailing edge while sequentially increasing in width. Vacuum to be generated is controlled on the basis of the above distance and the bending angle of the trailing rails.

  • Patent number: 6157521
Abstract: The two-stage actuator comprises a fine actuator 2 with an HGA 1, and a coarse actuator 10, which supports the fine actuator 2 secured to it and is rotatably supported. The fine actuator 2 includes an I shape spring 3, a small coil 4 and a yoke 5. The coarse actuator 10 includes a yoke base 8 with permanent magnets 9, facing the small coil 4. The I shape spring 3 has a longitudinally intermediate portion secured to a set set pin member 7 of the coarse actuator 10. A drive force generated in the fine actuator 2 as a result of energizing the small coil 4 with current application thereto, causes flexing of a leaf spring part of the I shape spring 3, thus fine driving the HGA 12 disposed in the fine actuator 2.

  • Patent number: 6115221
Abstract: A magnetic head slider support mechanism includes a flexure, a load beam, and a tongue member. The flexure supports a slider on which a magnetic head is mounted. The load beam has one end connected to an actuator mechanism and the other end having the flexure and applies a load force to the slider. The load beam and the flexure are integrally formed by using one thin strip plate. The tongue member has a U-shaped cross-section and is bent from the strip plate toward the slider supported by the flexure. The tongue member has a distal end being in contact with a rear surface of the slider to support the slider.

  • Patent number: 6072662
Abstract: In a flying type magnetic head slider which has an air bearing surface and flies over a magnetic disk surface on an air film bearing, two rail portions having a U-shape and/or V-shape are formed on the air film bearing surface. These rail portions are in upstream and downstream sides of the air flow, respectively. Each rail is arranged such that its convex portion faces an air upstream side and a recessed region is formed in an air downstream side. By producing negative pressure in at least two recessed regions defined by the rail portions, variations in flying height at a position on a recording medium are suppressed. Further, by changing the depths of each recessed portion, the negative pressure is controlled and variations in pitch angle and roll angle are suppressed.

  • Patent number: 5625513
Abstract: A floating head slider has a pair of side rails and a central rail on a air bearing surface thereof. Each of the side rails has a first, leading region extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the slider, a second, intermediate region extending from the first region and deviating from the direction of the longitudinal axis toward the other of the side rails, and a third, trailing region extending from the second region and further deviating from the direction of the first region. The directions of the first, second and third regions correspond to the direction of the air flow at the innermost track, intermediate track and the outermost track, to provide constant floating height and reduced roll. The central rail has a neck between a leading, small width region and a trailing, increasing width region.
