  • Patent number: 9800946
Abstract: This invention describes a cloud-based architecture that orchestrates the detection and dissemination of highly-dynamic, real-time, and fine-grained TV white space information to improve spectrum information used for White Space Devices (WSDs). Wasted spectrum opportunities were first identified, both temporal and spatial, due to the current approach of white spaces detection. This invention introduces a next generation of geo-location databases capable of tracking the state of the relatively static TV transmitters and the highly dynamic TV receivers. A quantitative evaluation of the potential gain in white space availability for large scale deployments of this novel architecture demonstrated significant improvement in the availability of white spaces.

  • Publication number: 20160091609
Abstract: Knowledge of the vehicle's lane position is required for several location-based services such as advanced driver assistance systems, driverless cars, and predicting driver's intent, among many other emerging applications. We present LaneQuest: a system and method that leverages the ubiquitous and low-energy inertial sensors available in commodity smart-phones to provide an accurate estimate of the vehicle's current lane. LaneQuest leverages the phone sensors about the surrounding environment to detect the vehicle's lane. For example, a vehicle making a right turn most probably will be in the right-most lane, a vehicle passing by a pothole will be in a specific lane and the vehicle angular velocity when driving through a curve reflects its lane. The ambiguous location, sensors noise, and fuzzy lane anchors; LaneQuest employs a novel probabilistic lane estimation algorithm.

  • Publication number: 20160050541
Abstract: A system for providing a fine-grained indoor location-based social network (LBSN), the invention leverages the crowd-sensed data collected from a plurality of users' mobile devices during the check-in operation and knowledge extracted from current LBSNs to associate a place with its name and semantic fingerprint. This semantic fingerprint is used to obtain a more accurate list of nearby places as well as automatically detect new places with similar signatures. A novel algorithm for handling incorrect check-ins and inferring a semantically-enriched floorplan is proposed as well as an algorithm for enhancing the system performance based on the user implicit feedback.

  • Publication number: 20150285639
Abstract: The Map++ as a system and method that leverages standard cell-phone sensors in a crowdsensing approach to automatically enrich digital maps with different road semantics like tunnels, bumps, bridges, footbridges, crosswalks, road capacity, among others is described. Our analysis shows that cell-phones sensors with humans in vehicles or walking get affected by the different road features, which can be mined to extend the features of both free and commercial mapping services. We present the design and implementation of Map++ and evaluate it in a large city. Our results show that we can detect the different semantics accurately with at most 3% false positive rate and 6% false negative rate for both vehicle and pedestrian-based features. Moreover, we show that Map++ has a small energy footprint on the cell-phones, highlighting its promise as a ubiquitous digital maps enriching service.

  • Publication number: 20130202111
Abstract: A method of encryption and decryption applied to a transmitted plaintext message in a communication network containing multiple subscriber nodes is provided. The method comprises the steps of: processing an Integrity check value (ICV); using a private key at the first subscriber node; providing a random initialization vector (W) executing a first operation on the random IV to obtain a sum IV; using the sum IV to process an encryption on the plaintext to obtain the ciphertext; transmitting the ciphertext to the second subscriber node wherein the second node receives the ciphertext; identifies the IV; utilizes the private key and the IV to process the decryption of the ciphertext to obtain the plaintext; generates a feedback message, the feedback message is then used to generate future sum IVs.

  • Publication number: 20050055568
Abstract: A system for detecting the presence of an intruder in a protected area utilizes a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) value of signals broadcast from transmitting stations deployed in the protected area. The system includes monitoring points for receiving broadcast signals, measuring the RSSI values of the received signals, and transmitting the measured RSSI values to a security system server. The security system server analyzes the RSSI values, and initiates security measures when the physical security of the protected area is violated which is detected when the measured RSSI values deviate from a predetermined strength of the broadcast signals. The security system also has the ability to track objects in the protected area and keep track of their movement in real time and report such movement. The system may be based on a Wi-Fi infrastructure in the protected area.
