  • Patent number: 11931303
Abstract: A foldable tiltable wheelchair that overcomes the foregoing deficiencies comprises a base frame comprising laterally spaced side frames. A tiltable seat frame is supported for pivotal movement in relation to the base frame. The tiltable seat frame comprises laterally spaced seat rails. A first foldable cross-member provides a rigid connection between the seat rails when in an unfolded position. According to one embodiment, a second foldable cross-member provides a rigid connection between the side frames when in an unfolded position. The first and second foldable cross-members coupled so that moving one cross-member moves the other cross-member. According to another embodiment, the tiltable seat frame comprises a seat back supported in relation to the seat frame. The seat back comprises laterally spaced back canes. The first foldable cross-member is coupled to the seat frame so that the back canes are supported in relation to the first foldable cross-member so as to limit lateral flexure of the back canes.

  • Patent number: 10828213
Abstract: A foldable wheelchair comprises a plurality of width-adjustable hinged foldable cross-members connected to side frames to support a pivotable tiltable seat frame. The seat frame angle is operably controlled by use of gas springs that can be configured to support users of varying weight. The wheelchair is further configured to control lateral stability of the seat frame. The seat frame cooperates with a forward positioned pivot that maintains the user's knees in a position relative to the ground. Wheel adjustments allow for a range of seat height.

  • Patent number: 8662516
Abstract: A caster mounting assembly for mounting a caster wheel on a wheelchair frame includes a mounting body defining a barrel portion to be fixed relative to the wheelchair frame and a rotatable body within the barrel portion that supports the caster wheel thereon for rotation relative to the rotatable body about an upright caster axis. The caster axis is arranged for rotation together with the rotatable body relative to the mounting body. A locking member is slidable within a channel in the mounting body and includes teeth in meshing engagement with corresponding teeth on the rotatable body. One or more positioning screws permit the locking member to be controllably displaced between longitudinally different locking positions within the channel corresponding to different angular orientations of the caster wheel axis.

  • Patent number: 7635142
Abstract: A latching mechanism permits a swing-away foot rest assembly on a wheelchair to be selectively latched into a use position extending forwardly from the wheelchair. Mating connectors are provided on the foot rest assembly and the frame of the wheelchair which are movable relative to one another by a transverse rocking pin which rocks about an upright lever axis in two directions to permit the latching mechanism to be released by deflecting a release lever coupled to the rocking pin in either one of two opposing directions. The release lever can be coupled to the rocking pin in a plurality of different orientations in the use position to suit the user. Camming faces on the connectors automatically align and load the mating connectors into an engaged position when the foot rest assembly approaches the use position from any one of multiple different directions.

  • Patent number: 7384058
Abstract: A foldable wheelchair (21) and foldable wheelchair frame assembly (26, 126) including a pair of side frames (24, 124, 224, 324), a cross-bracing frame assembly (36, 136) coupling the side frames (24, 124, 224, 324) together for movement transversely between a spaced apart deployed position and a proximate folded position. A variable length link assembly (61, 161, 261, 361) is mounted into and forms a part of the cross-bracing frame assembly (36, 136) in a position between at least one of the side frames (24, 124, 224, 324) and a remainder of the cross-bracing frame assembly. The extensible link assembly (61, 161, 261, 361) being formed for variation of the overall length in a direction extending transversely between the side frames (24, 124, 224, 324) during movement of the side frames (24, 124, 224, 324) between the deployed and the folded positions so as not to force the side frames (24, 124, 224, 324) into unparallel motion which causes the upholstery to bind the folding mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6264218
Abstract: A wheelchair side frame comprises a front side frame and a rear side frame coupled to the front side frame. The front side frame is adjustable relative to the rear side frame to vary the elevation of the rear side frame relative to the front side frame. The front and rear side frames may each have upper and lower portions. A first coupling couples the upper portion of the rear side frames to the upper portion of the front side frames. A second coupling couples the lower portion of the rear side frames to the lower portion of the front side frames. The first and second couplings are adjustable in elevation. A wheelchair may comprise a pair of side frames each including a front side frame and a rear side frame coupled to the front side frame. The rear side frames are adjustable in elevation relative to the front side frames. A pair of rear wheels supports the rear side frames and a pair of front casters supports the front side frames.

  • Patent number: 6227559
Abstract: A wheelchair has grow-tabs that permit the width of the wheelchair to be adjusted without affecting its height. The wheelchair has a side frame and a cross-brace member. The side frame has upper and lower side rails. The cross-brace member has upper and lower ends. An upper grow-tab is connected to the upper side rail. A link is connected between the upper grow-tab and the upper end of the cross-brace member. The upper grow-tab and the link are laterally adjustable relative to one another to vary the lateral space between the upper side rail and the cross-brace member without varying the height of the upper side rail. A lower grow-tab is connected to the lower side rail. The lower grow-tab is connected to the lower end of the cross-brace member. The lower grow-tab and the lower end of the cross-brace member are laterally adjustable relative to one another to vary the lateral space between the lower side rail and the cross-brace member without varying the height of the lower side rail.

  • Patent number: 6217052
Abstract: An axle support system for supporting an axle for a wheelchair drive wheel includes an elongated wheelchair frame member. A portion of the surface of the elongated frame member is a frame contact surface, and a portion of the surface of the elongated frame member is an indexing section defined by a series of grooves separated by lands. A bracket is mounted for movement along the elongated wheelchair frame member. The bracket has an orifice for receiving a wheelchair drive wheel axle, a bracket contact surface, and a connector for securing the bracket to the elongated frame member. The frame contact surface of the elongated frame member is aligned with the bracket contact surface, thereby preventing rotation of the bracket with respect to the elongated frame member. The connector is engagable with a selected groove of the series of grooves of the elongated frame member to fix the position of the bracket along the elongated frame member.

  • Patent number: 6168178
Abstract: A wheelchair comprises a frame and a chassis. The frame has two side frame members. The side frame members include upper frame members. The upper frame members have first and second mounting positions upon which the chassis may be mounted. The chassis has two mounting brackets. The mounting brackets are selectively attachable to respective upper frame members at the first and second mounting positions. The mounting brackets have lower ends that are structured and configured to rigidly support a rear wheel assembly when the mounting brackets are attached to the upper frame member at the first mounting position to provide a fixed chassis. When the mounting brackets are attached at the second mounting position, the lower end of the mounting brackets pivotally support a swing-arm assembly and suspension member to provide a suspension chassis. The same mounting brackets may be provided to construct each chassis or different mounting brackets may be provided to construct each chassis.
